7. Consider the Fringe Benefits Before Complaining
I'm with the previous posters. Sounds like you're "in" for some candle-lit activities.

When compared with the cost to duplicate such experiences on the private labor market, the $158 was a BARGAIN.

10. Those things are a trap. The only way to avoid spending $$$ is to beg off
to keep from going.

Oh, well! You might as well enjoy it now - or when they arrive.

p.s. The basket parties are a trap too.

11. My wife attended a couple of those too..
I just shut my mouth and endure the pain. Not worth the fight.

And eventually, she figured out what a RIP OFF they are.

12. I detest those things!
Candle parties, not candles. Apologies to any DU friends who host them. My most recent experience with a candle party came when a woman in my building who had never been anything but rather rude to me enthusiastically invited me to one at her place. When I didn't go to the party, she brought her catalog over to my house the next day and was pretty insistent about "giving me a chance to order something since she was so sorry I missed the party". Puh-leeze.

I picked the cheapest thing in the catalog and paid nearly $40 for a pair of tiny green candle holders (plus shipping and handling). If I didn't have a bit of the dysfunctional politeness of true Southerners in me, I would have slammed the door in her face. Grrrrr....

:o

15. LeftyDad probably sympathizes, I go nuts at Tupperware parties
I could supply the plastic food storage container needs of a small country and have enough left over for a party, but mostly I get it on ebay to save $$$.

16. the best way to get these candles
is at garage sales for 50 cents. either from the people that bought them at a "party" or the people who were selling them at a "party."

note: those that bought are probably selling at 50 cents at a garage sale. those that were trying to sell at parties are probably hoping to recoup their losses.
