Whether in the Dashiell Hammett books or as brought to life by the great Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. I also like the French Inspecteur Maigret from the Georges Simenon novels and also as appearing in many French films based on that famous police detective.

12. Philip Marlowe

Raymond Chandler's great creation, based in post-WW2 Los Angeles.

Although I cast a sentimental vote for another L.A. favorite, Jim Rockford. I just love the hell out of James Garner. He is the essence of all that is good and cool in the world.

14. The Rockford Files is one of my favorite all-time TV shows

The screenwriting on that show was top notch. I managed to tape most of the episodes and watch them from time to time. Angel was a fantastic character. And I loved the fact that Jim Rockford had a touch of larceny in his soul, despite being a good guy, particularly obvious in some of the elaborate scams they ran on the bad guys which occurred in my favorite episodes.
