I bought a car today...
...a 1992 Volvo 240 with almost 140,000 miles on it.
The owner took excellent care of it; and I've been told by an expert in such things that 93 was a good year for this model.

Wish me luck!

2. Good luck!
IIRC, your other car had more than 200k miles on it and was on its last legs.

Volvos are wonderful cars. Except mine. Let's just say that my repairman recognizes my voice now. Sigh.

But an older Volvo is probably wayyyy more reliable than the one I have.

14. I took NoSheep's advice
and called her friend who's a Volvo expert. First he suggested that I bring the car in to have him look at it. When I told him that'd be a little too far for me to drive (about 500 miles), he told me that 93 was a good year for 240s, and that I probably had a good deal since the original owner was selling it to me, and had taken care of the car.

16. Here's a pic...

Ours is the same color as this one, too. We need a wagon for hauling pumpkins in the fall. :-)

4. Good!
Did you get rid of the other vehicle? I bought a different car as well. The van is just too much to repair.

7. We'll probably donate it.
I have to get the MVA work complete on the Volvo first.

5. good luck!
If it indeed is in good shape then aim for the trifecta! 300,000 is a good target, it's what I'm hoping for for my 77 Toyota (110,000 to go!)

6. Let me guess, $3,000?
Of course that's a Nebraska price.

10. He was asking $5,000
We talked him down to $4,600; and he included a bunch of new oil filters and a roof rack.

He's a very nice man who took very good care of the car. :-)

11. That's a very good price.
Better to pay more now for a car in perfect condition, than to pay later in repairs.

Good luck with it!

8. not bad--
find out when the timing belt was changed and have a mechanic check every water hose --if they spring a leak the head warps. i know happened twice on my volvo. that`s the only things that went wrong with the one i had.

12. Timing belt was changed last year.
The owner gave me records of every repair the car's had, and the receipt for the battery, which has about 6 years left on its warranty.

13. Good deal.
Sounds like the previous owner was consciencious. Most Volvo owners tend to be.

It's probably a done deal, but be sure the waterpump and timing tensioner(s) were done when the timing belt was done... if not, you should do them. Beyond that, prepare for another 140,000 trouble-free miles.

20. Thanks for the tip!
They were done at the same time. I'm so impressed that he actually kept all these records. He even kept the original sticker!

Sedan or wagon? Like this one?

I just bought a 1973 Saab Model 96 v4 in great running condition. I've given up on cars loaded with electronics and have decided to go real simple.

19. Like this one...

Simple is good. This one may not be simple, but it's a lot less complex than my Chevy Lumina minivan. I'm anticipating lower repair bills since the engine isn't all crammed inside a sardine can of a hood!
