List your top three bands that you dislike that others like.... |
|
Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 01:07 AM by aquaman
Me, 1) Oasis- Never got them, probably does not help that they are assholes. 2) Pearl Jam- I'm Sorry, that guy's voice gets on my nerves, I like his political beliefs but that is about it. 3) Audioslave- Compared to Soundgarden this band is the Bay City Rollers.

1. The Rolling Stones. (Could Mick Jagger just do us all a favour and die already?)
2. Oasis (I'm a Blur fan myself)
3. Lynnerd Skynnerd (Or however the fuck you spell it. Neil Young is god and trashing him only exposes how pathetic they truly are.)
Khash.

Ronnie Van Zant, the late vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, LOVED Neil Young, and wrote that in fun - he was ribbing Young for slamming ALL southerners, and ignoring the good ones. He wore a Neil Young t-shirt on several of their albums. Neil Young LOVED that song, saying "I am proud to have my name in a song like theirs. They play it like they mean it". I have a t-shirt of Neil wearing a Skynyrd t-shirt!
Neil Young wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record, but Ronnie Van Zant died before he could do it, and Neil did it himself.
It troubles me that 31 years later, people still believe such a terrible falsehood about "Sweet Home Alabama" and the band's relationship to Young. I just posted about it in a HUGE GD thread a few weeks ago, and yet people STILL insist on slamming the song for the wrong reasons. Hate the music if you must, but realize that Skynyrd and Neil Young were MUTUAL FANS.
And Neil, although I love him, isn't god. The man endorsed REAGAN while he was president, fergawdsakes. And I am still mad at him for his song "Union Man", which is anti-worker. Don't even get me started on "Will To Love", a song basically about salmon lust.

I too was troubled to learn of his past political leanings. However, his music is amazing. Regarding the Lynyrd Skynard story, I knew your version as well. I myself appreciate that band. Good rock n roll.

17. Neil is mostly liberal |
|
"Rockin' In The Free World" showed that he hadn't forgotten his roots. He did great leftist songs in the 90's, then for some STUPID reason (maybe all that pot he smoked), he said after 9-11, "We should probably give up some of our freedoms for security". It was that kind of boneheadedness that made Ronnie poke fun at him for the anti-southerner generalizations, even as a fan.

4.) Oasis 5.) The Grateful Dead 6.) Pink Floyd 7.) Jimi Hendrix
Go ahead, tell me how great they are and how confused I must be to dislike such masters of music itself. I'll tell you that I don't give a shit and I'd rather listen to the Ramones any day over it.

Only Oasis sucks more than the Ramones. Jeezus! The Ramones were painfully awful, and fronted by a right-winger yet. Sloppiness and snotty attitude is no substitute for creativity and musicianship.
A few more of them need to die, and soon.

Grateful Dead - puh-leeze. Take away the drugs and the communal atmosphere and you have a lousy jam band with folk fusion pretensions. They suck bongwater. Phish did it better.
Duran Duran - please, please kill me now! They live on as undead zombies, existing only to extrude massive suckage.
Def Fucking Leppard. What more do I have to say? They were a rock band, once. Before Pyromania. Too Late for Love was their high-water mark. Then they learned how to suck. They're still at it today.

1) Led Zeppelin- OK, John Paul Jones and John Bonham rocked, but what's with Jimmy Page thinking he was any good on guitar? And Plant.. shezz, I have heard cats screwing outside my window that hit the notes better than him.
2) Lynyrd Skynyrd- OK, they had some good tunes for the 3 weeks they stayed alive, but they weren't that friggin' good. There were many many southern players that blew these guys away over and over again. One track of Johnny Winter blew away Skynyrds whole catalog of "southern rock".
3) Stevie Ray Vaughn- OK, but lighten up people. I love Stevie. I saw him 3 times and he rocked each time, but to put him along side of B.B, Johnny Winter, Albert King, Jimi, Albert Collins, Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy and so many others, sorry..Stevie had some good licks, but only about 4 of them. He wasn't all that.
*Disclaimer, I think my own thoughts, so go ahead and prove me wrong.

Creed, 'N Sync, and Gorillaz would be three of them. Grateful Dead, too.
Love Pearl Jam, U2, Rolling Stones, Radiohead, and Coldplay - like DMB, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd. and Led Zeppelin quite a bit, too... Oasis was good on What's The Story, Morning Glory?
I'm sure I'll disagree with many choices here, but I can take it. I'll just go on listening to them no matter what's posted. :-)

the lyrics don't speak to me at all, especially when they're trying to be all emo. blvd of broken dreams is total wanna-be emo crap, and I really can't fathom how people think that song says anything with any emotional depth. they're so shallow they can't even pull off angst, which is a pretty basic human emotion.

33. I think he's SO pretentious |
|
yet people treat him like this groundbreaking artist... it's because he's a white rapper, and somehow spewing misogynistic crap makes him "authentic."
It's not OK when black rappers are derogatory towards women, and call women bitches and hos, so why is that acceptable for a white guy, especially since he seems to me to advocate not just treating women as sex objects, but treating women as objects of violence. And it's not just one song, it's a good percent of his stuff. I think he really hates women, and it bugs me that young people are listening to that and thinking that that's a legitimate form of expression.
And don't go thinking I'm a feminazi either. I can rock out to ass rock with the best of them, but the violence just bugs.

I am just amazed by the number of people who aren't bothered by it. I was absolutely speechless when I found out my sister was a fan of his. MTV and radio stations wouldn't be playing Nazi music, so why do they feel so comfortable playing music that promotes violence towards women? It's fucking ridiculous. The violence doesn't just stop at women he also has some very violent homophobia. The fact that he is one of the biggest musicians of our time is frightening.

U2 - they were okay until 'The Unforgettable Fire'. REM - all post-'Document' albums are unbearably pretentious and whiny. The ones before that were bearably pretentious and whiny. Pixies - droning "I'm soooo hip" crapola by any other name... Dave Matthews Band - wanking never sounded so bland. Robert Palmer - you gotta be shittin' me! Soulless white bread pap. Depeche Mode - made the Pixies sound better than the Beatles. The Smiths - Applaud me as I shove a red hot spike up Morrissey's whiny pansy ass, with a knife I just ate a raw steak with. Matchbox 20 - Die, DIE. PLEASE DIE NOW. Aerosmith - too white for words. Prince - the emperor never had any clothes, people. He isn't a Prince, he is the King of The Posers. He should have been offed when he tried using that symbol as his name.

I will say this, at least they didn't try to be the Byrds reincarnate, like 99% of other college bands.

36. My far and away #1: Nirvana |
|
I must be one of the few people who came of age in the 1990's (I was born in 1980) who can't stand Nirvana. I also think that the 1990's are quite possibly the worst decade of music of the rock and roll era.
2. Nickleback/Creed, etc. I also can't stand pretentious angry white male rock typically sung by lead singers whose voices sound so scratchy that they must have started smoking from the age of 8. The bands I mention here are just the worst offenders.
3. U2: If they weren't constantly fawned over by the media and shoved down our throats by radio stations, I might actually find their music listenable in small doses, but unfortunately to me U2 has been so overplayed that I can't stand much of their music.

The (only) legacy of my imploded marriage is that my ex coined the phrase "Knee-Rock", describing all those Pearl Jam rip-offs (Creed, Nickelback, etc) with a "charismatic" lead singer who gets down on one knee and drones, head down, introspectively about his white, middle-class, blue-collar guilt, withe the microphone cupped in his clenched fists.

First of all, two guys is NOT a band. Second, if you name your band after a dildo that's a good indication that the music is going to be as phony and pretentious as that name implies.
Dishonorable mentions:
Electric Light Orchestra - combining rock with classical was a good idea, but Jeff Lynne royally fucked it up (like everything he touches)
Whitesnake - David Coverdale is the biggest fucking poser in rock history, and there is no such thing as a band named Whitesnake. (Find anyone who has played on more than two consecutive albums by said "band")

53. Smashing Punkins, Led Zeppelin, REM |
|
The Smashing Punkins are the REO Fucking Speedwagon of post-grunge. Sure, they sound okay enough and sounded fine blasting out of dorm windows in the 1990s, but Billy Corgan is the whiniest upper-class white prick I've ever heard, and they did NOTHING musically that wasn't done by somebody else in a far more superior way. Fuck off already, Billy, nobody gives a shit about your "pain"...
Led Zeppelin: just because you can moan about your lemon and play a one-stringed guitar solo doesn't mean you SHOULD. And who the fuck cares about what a bunch of fucking elves did a thousand years ago? Pretentious beyond belief, they're the only group who somehow managed to extract every last drop of soul out of the blooze. Put a fucking sock in it boys-- oh wait, judging by your trousers, you already have....
REM: Yay, more white guys with jangly guitars. Hey, the Byrds called, they want their sound back! And personally I don't give a fuck why Michael Stipe is so much better than all of us-- he still can't sing, his lyrics are pedestrian at best, and just because you can go all country-rock on us doesn't mean you should. Stealing licks from "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" does not make you Gram Parsons (another insufferable pretentions trustafarian).

2. The White Stripes - I'm supposed to like them. I'm an indie hipster, fer crissakes. But, I hate them. I truly, truly do.
3. Sleater-Kinney - I've tried. And tried. And then tried again to get into their music. It's just not happening.

I've seen NIN in concert TWICE (why? I'm a masochist I guess) and I still JUST DON'T GET IT. It's like warmed-over Ministry, but without the humor. Eh.
The White Stripes.....oh cool, primitive punk rock. Wow, never saw that before. Neat.
Sleater-Kinney. See White Stripes, but with a bass player. Yee-haw.
Geez I'm an asshole. :+

i agree with you on audioslave, but soundgarden is a tough act to follow.
and re: Oasis, I never see anybody say they like them. especially here at DU - so i think that's pretty much a gimme. i personally don't find Oasis as bad as everybody else, becuase Oasis knows they are pretentious and mediocre - which is more than can be said for all the shitty pretentious and mediocre bands that don't think what they're doing is derivative, unoriginal and shitty.

68. Two words: Pet Sounds |
|
it is a pop masterpiece. As good as anything the Beatles did, but almost all from the mind of Brian Wilson. THAT is why the so-called "hipsters" like the Beach Boys-- it sure isn't for Mike Love's whiny, nasally tenor. :D

64. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Radiohead |
|
The Chili Peppers are horrible, the singer has the worst, most annoying monotone voice of any band out today.
Nirvana is the most overrated band of recent times. Three chord, whiny, woe is me, pussy music. Cobain should have killed himself 4 years before he did and spared us the drivel. Rape me indeed.
Radiohead is just flat out crap. I can't really explain further than this. It's just unlistenable and it personally irritates me that people like them.
Dishonorable mention to: Yes, Bruce Springsteen, Steppenwolf, Creed, Billy Joel and Bon Jovi.

That's my current #1, mainly because of their obnoxious popularity. Lame, imitative ripoff of late '80's/early '90's UK electropop/rock. Other bands got there first and did it better. Fucking wankers.
The Grateful Dead. What their fans regard as "great" (those godawful extended "jams" and so on) I regard as musical masturbation, and if there's been a more overrated band in the past 35-40 years, I haven't heard of them. More fucking wankers.
Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen was/is marginally talented at best, and David Lee Roth is an irritating idiot. Yet more fucking wankers, and the fact that anyone ever thought they were GOOD is a sad commentary on the overall suckaliciousness of rock music when they became popular.
I could probably think of at least a dozen more.

Then, later on, I thought, "why was I ever into these guys?" I think I was much more attracted to the attitude and the cult aspect of Jim Morrison than anything else. Musically I don't think they were very great.

Nirvana- Had a good rhythm section, but Kurt Cobain couldn't sing, write songs, or play guitar.
The White Stripes- I'd rather jam an icepick in my ear.
Dave Matthews Band- The Grateful Dead for wimps.

1. Creed. Nuff said. Besides, they also suck as Alter Bridge. Same faux-Christian cock-rock, but with a different shitty singer.
2. Slipknot. No.
3. Simple Plan. Fuck, I listen to emo and I can't even take this shit.

The Who--I don't know, they are just boring.
The Grateful Dead--Their music was DOA from the first time they played it.
