Me? It makes me batshit crazy whenever someone refers to Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, known as N. Lenin, as VI Lenin instead, which Americans do incessantly. Yes darlings, I know I'm insane. I'm also reasonably sure this is something else we can blame on Stalin. Indeed, in my Progress Publishers' History of the USSR Volume 1, there he is in the index as VI Lenin. (Progress was a Soviet house organ.) Still, it's ahistorical, inaccurate and annoying. (PS: Calling him Nikolai Lenin is even worse. The N. just stood for itself; I think it meant Nemo or "nobody" in Latin, but wasn't meant to represent any name but rather to convey, "This is a pseudonym, stupid.")
Yours?

5. It's not obscure, but it's something that's driving me batshit of late. |

I'm getting so damn sick and tired of people coming into the casino where I work who couldn't be bothered to read a simple 10-page pamphlet on the rules and basic strategies for the games I deal. They just literally throw their money away with no respect for the odds or proper strategies of the games, especially blackjack and craps. Since the bulk of my income is derived from tips, I need everyone to have a decent chance of winning so that they'll feel compelled to tip me. But when people don't even know what a double down is or what "5x odds" means and yet they're at the table making $5, $10, and even $25 wagers while oblivious to the fact that they're giving the house a 10% edge instead of a 1.25% edge (or 4% instead of 0.2%... whatever!), it's enough to make me spit nails.
Yeah, I know what they say about "fools and their money", and "suckers born every minute" but JESUS H. CHRIST!!! :grr:

10. Really, though, the problem is more how the casino chooses to pay |
|
Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 02:57 AM by undisclosedlocation
(or not pay) you. It's to be expected that a pretty large percentage of gamblers in any given casino are going to be there just to have fun and not have a clue what they're doing. Wouldn't it be great if you could get the casino to let you give seminars (and pay you for them) for beginning gamblers? Just dreaming out loud here of course; no casino would shell out for something like that when they can just take the suckers' money, though in the long run they'd make so much more if more people realized, as you say, that they could have a much better chance of winning if they played smarter. Anyway, I feel your pain. I don't know what else you could do, short of creating a website for beginning gamblers (or finding one and giving out the URL), but agree that you have a legitimate and far from trivial pet peeve there.
Edited for spelling even though you read it already. Damn I'm anal retentive!

Even though the pay I make in my joint is less than 1/3 what the best jobs (like Hard Rock and the Bellagio) make, at least I can say one good thing about the place. Whereas most of the "big" places are adamant about dealers not "coaching" the players, I make it a point to talk at length to at least some of my players about the best ways to play. Giving them not only the best plays, but the detailed reasons for making them. And most of the time, they end up loving me for it. But then there are those people who just have the word "irritating" stamped on their foreheads (figuratively speaking, of course) and I couldn't give a rat's ass if I take their $20 bill in 30 minutes or 30 seconds.

7. I hate pop culture depictions of kids acting like adults |
|
I've seen this creep into more and more things lately, but it makes me cringe whenever I see a kid acting like an adult (I'm not talking about older teens here, I'm taking about kids around 10) and adults acting like kids. It really is a good idea for kids to be kids and not obnoxious brats acting far older than their age.

Especially women who obviously spend a lot of time and money on expensive shoes and a pedicure, but they don't want to admit they're a size 8 instead of a 7 so they buy the smaller size and then hang out of them. YUCK!

"very unique". That phrase is everywhere, even in formal ilterature.
Listen, people, and listen well...
Uniqueness is an absolute, meaning "one of a kind". Either something is unique, or it is not. There are no varying degrees of "unique", so it is impossible for something to be "very unique".

14. I don't think you get your poetic license taken away if you use it to |
|
refer to a person, though. After all, depending how you look at it, we're all unique or we're all largely identical. Saying that someone is unusually unique, while crazy on its face, could be a way of saying "really unusual." In other words, since we're all unique, the writer finds it necessary to add the modifier. Don't think I'd do it, but I can see the point of view.
When people say it about me, though, they're trying to find a nice way of saying "batshit crazy." :P
