Heat wave - will my dogs be okay tommorow? |
|
We are supposed to have a heat index of 110 on Monday. I have to work and the dogs will be outside all day. I have a kiddie pool (6-8 inches deep filled with water for them, I will top off the water bowl with ice and fresh water. The dogs are not leashed (thank you country living) so they can move to shade or go to the pond nearby to get muddy if they wish. Do you think they will be ok? I could leave them inside but I am gone for 14 hours on a workday so they WILL poop/pee in the house or try to hold it and suffer.

or see if a neighbor can check on them.
Dogs and cats have a much greater tolerance for heat than humans, but I don't now how much.

I would think they would be fine since they can move around to shade and they have a pond and a pool.
We had a heat index of 111 yesterday and even my old horse was OK, they have fans and a mister and shade in the barn and in their pastures.
It'll be hot but if they have been out in the heat so far I would think they would be fine.
I would worry too, I always do.

3. Sounds like a good setup. Should be ok. |
|
With shade and water they should be fine, assuming they don't have medical conditions.
I'd put out extra water bowls, incase they knock over the existing ones. But the kiddy pool may fill in that need.

5. Animals are a Hell of a lot smarter than us. |
|
If they have water and shade they should do just swimmingly.
It's us "smarter" Humans who have the trouble, with our "Oh, Gee, it's sure hot today...Sure don't feel like doing anything" then we cut 2 acres of grass, climb up on the roof to patch the shingles, THEN go for a 15-mile Run...
In the meantime, Fang is sleeping under the hedge, having found a spot with a breeze...

6. Your dog's age and weight is a factor. I'm sure they have shade, right? |

7. On the local news this am re: dogs |
|
They even suggested putting sun screen on their ears and nose and the balder, less fur covered spots.

8. Block ice works real good. |
|
I freeze a bowl overnight then put it out for my outside boys. It takes a couple of hours to melt if their water bowl is in the shade.
