Lance Armstrong Question..
AKA Superman... I saw in the paper today he was hangin around between races with his kids, John Kerry and Sheryl Crow. Did he get divorced and is now dating Sheryl? I didn't know Kerry was once a racer also. I also didn't know Armstrong, a Texan, was a Kerry supporter. I'm just sooo uninformed.

1. Yes, he got divorced....
..and has been dating Sheryl Crow for at least a year (I think).

I don't think the thing with Kerry was political. I think Kerry is just a racing fan/cyclist.

Armstrong is I believe also friends with Bush. I don't know that he's political as much as just has causes that he supports and in those instances it's best to stay neutral and not alienate a large swath of people.

5. Lance was at Kerry's election night party.
I think Lance is (or was) an active Kerry supporter. Could also have something to do with Kerry also being a cancer survivor.

Lance did kick his wife to the curb a couple of years ago to hook up with Crow. His choice. I lost a little bit of respect for him after that. His wife stood by him through the cancer and gave birth to his three kids. I dunno. I hate to judge.

7. I also was rather disappointed when I first heard this. The assumption
is that the wife/mother is the wronged party in a situation like this.

But we can't ever really know what goes on in people's marriages unless there's obvious wifebeating or whatever.

14. True enough.
There's certainly not enough information in the public domain to really ascertain what went wrong for them. They've kept it private, and I respect that.

It's just the surface details that give me pause.

8. Yeah, that was hard to swallow
but we really don't know what sort of relationship they really had even though they have some beautiful children. From what I hear, Lance does not avoid being a father to them even though he is divorced. One thing Lance said he was going to do after retiring is spending more time with his kids.

13. I think the divorce was mutual.
I don't think she really liked moving to Europe for 1/2 the year. I think she wanted to stay here with the kids.

She and Lance don't say bad things about one another, so everything seems amicable.

15. Lance and his wife met...
after he beat the cancer. I think at some sort of Cancer awareness fundraiser. They had already filed for divorce when Lance hooked up with Crow.

4. Divorce and hooking up with Crow is old news now, I believe she
travelled with him during his last Tour as well.

Lance is popular with wingnut Texans as well as everyone else (people who mostly would never have clue number 1 about cycling but just really like the fact that someone from Texas won something).

It's kind of funny. Lance is from Plano, TX which is Bush worship central. He grew up the son of a single mom among rich suburbanites and was not one of the "in" crowd. In his autobiography he blasts Plano as a bastion of golf shirt wearing conformity. He's chosen to live in Austin, one of the most liberal areas in the state. But Plano loves claiming him as a native son during the Tour, heh.

To my knowledge he's been pretty cagey about politics and hasn't been an advocate for anything but cancer issues, publicly. His relationship with Sheryl Crow hopefully gives a clue as to any possible political alignment.

It would be great if he were a liberal and "came out" as such, would be nice to cause some heads to explode. One can only hope.

6. People have come to him asking him to run for office.
I am sort of leary of Lance as a politician. Even though he dates Sheryl Crow who has been known to be quity lefty, I just think of Lance's mom in Plano, TX, and it is all repuke country. His mom looks like a stereotypical repuke. Sorry for typecasting her. I hope I am wrong. She was/is a hard-working single mom so that itself may indicate less repukeness. I dunno. . If he comes out political I hope it is on our side.

12. Don't judge where folks were born because...
Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 12:12 PM by LynneSin
...if you did you'd think I was a diehard gun-toting, war-loving repukes. I grew up in rural pennsylvania which is a major repuke stronghold. Doesn't mean you'll turn out republican. One only needs to apply a few braincells to realize that the people you grew up with didn't have a clue about what party would better support them.

There is one main thing I would consider about his politics - I highly doubt that Sheryl Crow, someone who has been extremely vocal against the war, could date someone who thought the war was a good idea. Lance's cause is cancer so he probably feels it's best not to comment on the war so he stays focused on what is important to him

11. Personally, I hope he never shows his political persuasion publicly
The reason? I think it's time to recognize athletes and artists for their accomplishments and not their political beliefs, which after all, they've got every right to have. Now if a guy like Ted Nugent comes out and says stupid shit politically, which seems to be a constant, then he or she is fair game. So it would be nice to admire Armstrong just for his great achievements, and not love him or hate him because of political beliefs. Hope he just goes about his life.
