i scrounge flea markets and ebay for this stuff. it is amazing what the sellers try to pass off as original. stuff from avon and anchor hocking. i don't think so

14. it is from the depression glass era.

most of what i have dates from the 30's but some can be from the victorian era. i have heard, and need to see if true, that gold was used in achieving the red color.

i have a bowl a lot like this one from my grandmother.



i think anchor hocking might have made some way back but the some people try to pass off the current red glass as the old stuff.

three small cranberry glass juice goblets? My grandmother willed a lot of her depression era glass to me (she was born in 1911) and I have three cranberry glass juice goblets (that's the best way I can describe them) with clear glass bases that are beaded along the bottom. I'd love to find three more to make them a useable set.

I have a 2"deep shelf which runs around the top of my kitchen which has porcelain tiles, small pieces of pottery, and groupings of some other small items (example: three commemerative glasses from Kentucky).

When I travel, I try to get something for my bracelet, a tile for my kitchen shelf (if I can find one), an item for our Christmas tree and sometimes a coffee mug. I have a lot of mugs and not much space for them.

If I only buy one thing on a trip, it will be something for the tree. We have some really cool Christmas ornaments as a result.

I have a few cat themed things, but not many.

My grandmother had cranberry glass 'fancy dishes' that were reserved for dessert.

I love the reference to passing off the anchor hocking stuff as cranberry glass. Wel, it is the cranberry color -- says so right on the label!

The best places to go are the antique malls. Usually they are priced higher than a cat's ass. But you can find one tucked away in a dealer's booth, sometimes for practically nothing. Stay away from Ebay and other on-line sellers. That is where they cost you. Shipping is a bear with phones.

Some movie/TV stuff, though my collection has dwindled and been separated through the years.

Used to collect comic books. Had a humongous collection. But no more. :(

Cat oriented stuff, but I'm not fond of certain kinds. I don't care for the primitive designs, and no cutesy kitten stuff. REAL kittens, in photographs or other are great, but I like more mature and settled cats. I also don't care a whole lot for comic cats.

Fantasy animals--unicorns to some degree, dragons to some degree, but my favorites are pegasi. The more striking, the better. Sometimes designers do them like My Little Pony style or Miss Kitty (or whatever the hell it is!) and I hate that.

Keychains or mugs from traveling. I prefer mugs, as I have a substantial mug collection, though. Everywhere I travel I try to at least get one.

Software. (heh, heh) I love new stuff--better than Christmas morning, especially if it's new plugins to play with in Photoshop. :D

19. Antique jade figurines - mostly warriors

I do have some nice jade bowls, plates and one manuscript but really like the warrior figurines. Now if I could just figure out a way to display them without having to dust every day. (I don't dust everyday but they sure could use it!)

The cost of the jade is fairly cheap it is the shipping and handling charges from China that will kill you if you aren't careful.

I started collecting art when I was 21. Bought a watercolor for $7 at an outdoor festival and haven't stopped since. My theory on collecting boils down to--if I can't live without it, I have to figure out a way to procure it. The way I determine whether I can't live without it is that after I've seen something if it sticks in my mind, if my mind keeps going back to it, then it's a good work of art.

(pre-1950). And I have a small collection of etched glassware that started with my mom's bowl and candlesticks, and now includes a few treasured pieces of Cambridge Rosepoint - 3 water goblets, a candy dish and a bud vase. Very pretty stuff.

Also cat hair, since my cat has the notion that since his hair looks so beautiful on him, it must look beautiful everywhere.

a 1943 "The New Encyclopedia of Modern Sewing". It was stuck on the top shelf of a built-in bookcase when we bought this house a couple of years ago. The previous owner was given the book by her father (according the the inscription) in 1943. She must've been newly married, based on what her age was when she died.

I like looking through it - it's funny to see some of the styles and to read about how to mend stockings and girdles. :rofl: Some of the advice is pretty handy, though.

73. I have that one, too.

Mine came from a thrift store because my sister got our mother's copy. That book must have been a best-seller! I actually used it the first time I made fitted slipcovers, and the directions were first rate. (Some of their mending and recycling ideas may come in handy in this economy, too.)

Anyway, that was the book that started my collection; I've been making my own clothes since high school, and sewed in a costume shop for about 15 years, so a lot comes together for me in those books.

I've got a truckload of the classic 1970s figures at my old house, somewhere. I tried to do a self-appraisal of the collection about ten years ago, and it was worth a couple thou, IIRC.

I should probably get it appraised/insured appropriately, since some of the figurers I know are extremely rare and worth several hundred in decent condition.
