9. Ever read the Xanth books?

They're fantasy with a great deal of punning in them. One of the characters is a horse of sorts, who give people bad dreams, traveling only at night when people are sleeping. And since it's a female horse, it's a "night mare." They're a fun series, long, spanning generations in their epic. Your title made me think of them. They're by Piers Anthony if you're ever inclined to check them out.
