Patriotic Insanity in red state hell |
|
My friend works in a clothing store and was sent to a balloon store yesterday to buy some mylar balloons to decorate the store. The choices, other than birthday, were pretty limited. There was a yellow smiley face, an American flag and another cutesie balloon (can't remember what it had on it). My friend really wanted solid color balloons but they had none.
So she told the clerk that she wanted several of the smiley and the other cutesie balloon. So the clerk said "No flag balloons?" And my friend said no.
The clerk then jumped on her and asked her "What is wrong with the flag? Why don't you want to honor the flag?"
My friend said it isn't what we want to decorate with today. The clerk said, "Well, what store is this you are decorating? Because you can be sure I won't shop there."
My friend said "Well that would be none of your business. And you can be assured I will not be shopping for balloons here anymore."

We're talking BALLOONS. Those round things with helium in them.
I keep telling my friend the mindless patriotic fundies are coming out of the woodwork here. I think she believes me now.

She could have also responded that there was nothing wrong with the flag but there was something wrong with the flag on a damned balloon to decorate for parties. I can see it for the 4th but for a party other that that? Frankly I don't give a damn about who does what with the flag, it is just a symbol for what I care about, but I like your friends response.
OK, I am being crotchety today but being your close neighbor I am too sick of this shit.

And they get mouthier every day. This is my friend I went to Nebraska with. I ate lunch with her while listening to Christian Karoake. We counted the SUVs and Hummers on the highway and were puking over all the Xtian and W bumper stickers in the Cornhusker state.
She used to roll her eyes at me when I talked politics. Now she is getting as pissed off as I am. I keep telling her she needs to come to our meetups. You guys would definitely hit it off.
BTW, we were in Topeka last night. Got a wild hair at 9:00 and drove up to the Prairie Band Casino. I waved at you from the road :hi:

Stern and scary and I imagine what he would have thought of that. Singa with us now ina four part harmony. Anda one anda two.........

It's obvious that people have simply lost it.
These people really are acting like brownshirts!
I wonder what would happen if you popped one of thos "patriotic" balloons. Would you be arrested for "flag desecration"?

There's this underlying tension in the atmosphere that's only been getting worse since Bush claimed the office of the Presidency in 2001. He even called Rush Limbaugh a "good American" or some other crap rhetoric. All it's going to take is some nutball with too much time on their hands, listening to Michael Savage or some other Hate Radio™ Host, and think that setting a bomb off at some Democratic (or liberal) event would be a good idea. And that's all it will take. I hate what the GOP has made this country become.

32. I'd ask, "Are you on commission?" |
|
or, "Did your boss buy too many for the 4th of July and now the extra box covers up your break room chair?"
and then to rub salt in the wound I'd ask, "Mylar is pretty toxic when lit aflame, but according to my Flag Etiquette handbook when a flag is worn down and needs to respectfully destroyed, so as to not show our colors run, the most respectful way is by burning it and burying the ashes. So if and when my flag DEFLATES (and this is the part that's hardest not to laugh) is it okay to just throw it away with the rest of the trash (here's where you *shudder*), should it be burned somewhere to release the toxic fumes, or bring it back to you for recycling?"
i'm sure it'll all be wasted jokes because psychotics like this don't get humor, but at least it'll be a riot when you get back into the car.

33. Not patriotic -- it's **nationalistic**. And that's dangerous. |
|
Not to mention anti-American.
Main Entry: na·tion·al·ism Pronunciation: 'nash-n&-"li-z&m, 'na-sh&-n&l-"i-z&m Function: noun : loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups

A few times a year the store manager sends a couple of us out with a very simple order: buy all the orange, black and white balloons you can possibly find.
I've seen lots of mylar balloons--but never one in solid colors. Always with designs.
