SW fans: Do you think "Sith" will dethrone "Empire" in ten years time? |
|
Although, in my estimation, "Revenge of the Sith" lacks the lyricism of "Empire," Christensen/McGregor/McDiarmid leave impressions as indelible as Hamill/Ford/Fisher; and the subtext and character nuances are at least as substantial as the thematic tapestry of Episode V.
Whaddya think: will "Sith" eventually be seen as the crown jewel of a decidely mixed saga?

6. The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis is arguably the best acted scene in the saga |
|
Accordingly, I'd stack scenes such as Anakin's final breakdown on Mustafar, and Obi-Wan's farewell to his smoldering student, against any of the lauded conversational pieces in "Empire."
And don't forget, ESB had its share of corkers. Or did you forget, "scruffy looking nerf-herder?"

I like the prequels I except them for what they are, but Empire is the best.

4. Not sure, but it sure stands up threre with the original trilogy. |
|
I was pretty impressed with it. McDiarmid should get an oscar nod, but probably won't.

7. Wouldn't call myself a TRUE Star Wars fan, so don't take my opining |

seriously...but I think Sith was by far better than any of the rest of them.
The whole series is kind of nothing without Revenge of the Sith.

9. I think Empire will still be the crowning glory |

Although I think Sith will be a very respectable number 2.

RoTS is better than RoTJ.
People knocking RoTS, or the prequel trilogy in general, for wooden dialogue and poor acting are blinded by their memories of the Original Trilogy. Lucas might not have written Empire or Jedi but neither have eloquent dialogue or particularly memorable acting. I still love them but when I've watched the Original Trilogy recently I've laughed at as much of the dialogue and acting as I did in the Prequel trilogy, sans Jake Lloyd but good child actors are a needle in a haystack.
I think RoTS may one day overtake Star Wars but not Empire.

14. Actually, I prefer any SW movie to "Jedi" |
|
The first act is meandering and juvenile and the second bereft of narrative thrust (save for the speeder bike chase).
Even the underwhelming "The Phantom Menace" seemed to be indicative of improvement.

very interesting.
While I don't dislike The Phantom Menace as much as most I consider it the weakest of the six.

18. Several reasons why I prefer "Phantom" |
|
Although most of the characters are painfully underwritten and the framework is disjointed, I fancy TPM to be superior because it has a strong, central anchor in the guise of Liam Neeson's Qui Gon Jin, an earthy mid-section, a genuine sense of whimsy, and two outstanding set pieces (the pod race, the Duel of the Fates).

but disagree with you about Jedi. While the ending is weak I find the rest of the film compelling.

"Sith" was by and large the best SW film since "Empire," but Empire is still a classic.

I've always thought that Han and Leia's relationship was as phony as Anakin and Padme's.

19. I don't think so, but it may become the second best... |
|
"Empire" was, and still is as some call it "the Best of the Star Wars films" but I think "Sith" will come in second. Personally,I like "Sith" a little bit more than "Empire", but thats because I have a bias favoring Palpatine more than any other character in the whole series. And Ian McDiarmid deserves at least a Oscar nomination, if not an Oscar for his role as Palpatine.

I f'n loved Loved LOVED 'Return of the Sith'!!! I can quote any line spoken by Palpatine right off the top of my head, I'm obsessed with that character and I think ROTS is clearly the best of the PT.
But I re-watched ESB the other day and it's just amazing. Even 1980's muppet Yoda blows the super-fantastique CGI version away. And you can actually connect with the characters in a way you just don't in the PT. It's a moving and tragic cinematic experience.
I still think that Lucas should have let other directors handle the PT the way he let them handle ESB and ROTJ.
