Best Cover Song?
My top two are Fiona Apple's Across the Universe, and Iron&Wine's cover of "Such Great Heights". What are some of your favourites?

28. Yeah--can't remember where I heard it from
And here we go! Google gives me this:

http://www.elviscostello.info/articles/h-l/ipswich_evening_star.991123.html

"I saw David Bowie on television the other day and someone asked what his favourite song was and he said Shipbuilding. I never knew he liked that song! Somebody who's had all the ambition he's had in his career, of all the songs he could have picked, he picked Shipbuilding? It's amazing!

"AS Good choice, I think.

"EC He chose Robert Wyatt's version, rightly, as the definitive version."

34. "Across the Universe" & Billy Bragg and Wilco
Great choice on Iron & Wine. I've never heard Fiona Apple's version of "Across the Universe", but my favorite cover might have to be Rufus Wainwright's version of "Across the Universe", which is funny because the first time I heard it I wanted to pull my hair out. But every time i hear it, I like it more.

Wilco & Billy Bragg on "Mermaid Avenue", covering all sorts of greatness by Woody Guthrie is another top on the list.

:hi:

Day after day I'm more confused
So I look for the light in the pouring rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
I'm feelin' the strain, ain't it a shame

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away

Beginning to think that I'm wastin' time
I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
I'm countin' on you to carry me through

And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's comin' through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
Rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You help me along makin' me strong

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
