How many German-American families changed their names from Hitler? |
|
in the 30's and 40's? It'd be interesting to get statistics from state archives, etc.

Johann Georg Heidler, Adolf's grandfather married a 47 year old peasant woman named Maria Anna Schicklgruber.
Five years before the marriage on June 7, 1837, Maria had an illegitimate son who she named Alois and who became Adolf Hitler's father. It is probable that the father of Alois was Johann Heidler, though there is no conclusive evidence. Johann eventually married Maria but never bothered to legitimize Alois after the marriage. Hitlers father grew up as Alois Schicklgruber.
Johann vanished for 30 years and reappeared at age 84 with the spelling of his name changed to Hitler to testify that he was the father of Alois Schicklgruber, probably in order to help him obtain an inheritance from an uncle. So the name Schicklegruber was scratched out of the baptismal registry at the local parish and Alois Hitler was wrote in it's place.
