Hey, tall chiquitas? I have a question.
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 12:46 PM by SarahBelle
I'm relatively short (5' 4 1/2") and clueless, BUT my daughter is pushing 5'8" with super long legs and she needs new clothes for school soon. She's 13, so we need young and fashionable here (and not super expensive). Anyplace online or otherwise? Help!

1. Pants are a problem
I'm only 5'7" but I have a friend who's 5'10" who has perpetual problems buying pants. For some reason, men have choices of different inseam lengths but women are all presumed to be the same height. Your best bet is mail-order places that have a wide variety of sizes. llbean.com and landsend.com are both good for basic pants in tall sizes.

4. I was 5'9" when I was her age here's some suggestions
Old Navy actually has tall clothing but it's hard to find in their stores. I would also try L.L. Bean which is where I get most of my work pants

When I was her age, the only clothes they had for tall kids was like bright polyestor stretch pants that looked like something trashy grandmas would wear, not stylish 13 year old kids

14. LynneSin is lucky enough to live near an authentic LLBean outlet
in Wilmington, and where I travel to get a lot of my Tall jeans and Tall other pants (when they have any). Got jeans in my size for $10 last winter!

It seems that a lots of brick-and-morter stores are dropping "Talls" (Kohl's and Penneys used to have some, but not so much anymore), so online is probably your best bet, sad to say. I noticed Delia's offers some pants with a 34" inseam...

I'm 5'11", and ever since I was your daughter's age, it's been tough to find pants that are long enough. God bless the internets.

5. Is her father tall?
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 12:55 PM by Shakespeare
If not, and if height is GENERALLY not a trait in either family, you might want to get her checked for Marfan's Syndrome. My husband (6'3" and the only tall person in his family) almost died last month from a (previously undiagnosed) Marfan's-related heart issue (long, long story). Now we're looking at having my tall, leggy stepdaughter checked to see if she's got it (and then do other appropriate testing, especially on the heart, if she does).

Sorry to sound scary, but if she's tall AND has really long limbs, that's one of the first hints of the syndrome. Maybe just (casually) ask her pediatrician his/her thoughts next time she's in for an appointment.

8. I think we're ok there.
Her dad is just short of 5'9" (also with long legs for his height- 33" inseam), but both my grandfathers and all my uncles are over 6 feet. I have a cousin that's 24 and SHE'S 6'1". She's always been 90-95 percentile for height since she was a baby and is still on the same curve. I'm also pretty sure she's about done as far as puberty, growth spurts, and all that. I only grew more more inch past after I was her age, so I suspect the same.

11. Ah, that's good, then.
My husband is still recovering from 8 hours of emergency open-heart surgery last month, and I'd hate to see ANYBODY else go through what we did because they were unaware of the syndrome, as we were.

7. Fortunately for her, a lot more clothing manufacturers are offering
different lengths than when I was in high school. I have seen short, medium, and long lengths at Kohl's and JC Penney. Lee, Levis, and their own brands.

10. Express and Limited sell pants with various lengths.
As does American Eagle. Those stores are affordable and very hip. Wet Seal is a very inexpensive store with hip clothing and will accommodate a tall girl. Also check out Gap and Old Navy.

12. Express and Old Navy
Were going to be my suggestions, too, as they both carry 'tall'. Good luck!

13. Definitely look for 'tall' or 'long' cuts.
I'm 5'10" and if 'average cut' pants fit my middle, the cuff hits me above the ankle (so attractive!); if they're long enough, the waist/hips are way too big.

15. Delias
www.delias.com

If you order anything for her join the club and get 15% off. Check out the sale items first. We bought 9 good quality sheet sets for under $100.00 and that included shipping.
