cocoa most of the time. Just make them PB flavored.
1 stick oleo 1c brown sugar 1 c white sugar 1/2 c milk 3 tblsp cocoa 1/3 c peanut butter (less if you want a more subtle flavor) 2 tsp vanilla 3 c. rolled oats
In heavy saucepan over medium heat melt oleo. Add sugars and milk. (For chocolate variation, add cocoa and beat into liquid with whisk.)
Heat to a rolling boil until liquid thickens and a drizzle dropped into a cold glass of water makes a ball on the bottom of the glass, then flattens out. (I have no clue how long this takes but it seems to be a bit of a wait. These things are tricky, though. Don't cook them long enough and you have taffy. Cook 'em too long you get granola.)
Remove from heat and immediately beat in with wooden spoon the vanilla and peanut butter. Add oats and set out on cookie sheet lined with wax paper at double speed or the mixture will set in the saucepan.

4. You are welcome. You might try googling some other recipes for them and |
|
see if anyone actually has a time to boil suggestion. (My originial recipe said 1 minute, but there is NO way that is right.)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=236&topic_id=5582#5717I'm probably going to have to make some tonight. Is the 1 minute boil too long for you or too short? About half the time I wind up with taffy instead of cookies.

14. It has to be a rolling boil for one minute |
|
i.e. - a boil that you can't stir down.
I've never made them without the cocoa before. Sounds kinda good.

Here's the version we made as kids. Ingredients are pretty close to yours. 1 stick margarine 2 cups sugar 3 Tbls cocoa 1/2 cup evaporated milk 1/2 cup peanut butter 3 cups oatmeal (rolled oats) 1 teas vanilla
Combine margarine, sugar, cocoa and milk in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook for one minute. Remove from heat and stir in peanut butter, oats, and vanila. Beat until it loses its shine. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper and let cool for 10 minutes.

We thought they were good as kids.

It's probably a combination of things (my recipe has more PB and no brown sugar, for example) but this version does not set up unless you beat the shine out of the batter. Beating the shine out took about 5-10 minutes, depending on the strength of the little arms doing the beating. We used a wooden spoon! I think this was my mother's clever way to let us "cook" with her while she took a break -- she'd leave the kitchen after the mixture came off the stove. :D
