Canada... What's it like?
I know that this is a kind of general question, but how do you Canadian folks find life in Canada? I mean, day to day living.

The reason I ask is that I'm a Brit currently looking for a country to settle in as I need to find a neutral country to live in as Mrs Dolgoruky is not British and my son is somwhere in between, nationality-wise. We've had problems settling in our respective countries (and believe me, we've tried) so a third option seems the most appropriate.

Thanks for any answers!

1. What's it like? Well, for one thing, everybody's asleep.
It's the middle of the night on this side of the pond. Suggestion: try starting this thread in the Country: Canada section when people are awake. Threads tend to "stick" around longer there and generate more numerous and well thought-out responses.

Good luck. Myself, while I'm posting from Vancouver, it's 2:00am, and I'm tired and rather...no, seriously - inebriated from a day at the beach...I'd be happy to help tommorrow in the Canada section. Cheers.

3. Funny you should mention nude Canadian women.
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 04:34 AM by nine23
I spent the day today at Wreck Beach, the fabulously wacky nude beach on the West Side of the city (Vancouver). Lot's of nekked women, but I'm afraid "The Bush Crime Family in America" wasn't paramount on anybody's mind (at least temporarily). It was more like playing frisbee, nekked wind-surfing, and selling organic pina coladas in true nekked entrepreneurial beach spirit.

And yes, they taste much better when served up by a beach hippy chick with no clothes on...

8. I moved here 4 years ago from the US
And I've fallen head-over-heels, madly in love w/ Canada, whereas before it was just a blind crush.

It's not perfect, but I doubt if I'd ever move back to the US, even if my wife and I were to ever break-up.

About the only things I have a problem w/ are not being able to buy beer at a 7-11 or bgrocery store, and Don Cherry. Other than that...

They love hockey. They all have mullets. They eat disgusting foods like "pickled mini onions" or "mustard sweet pickles". They speak french in this one little part, for no apparent reason whatsoever. DId I mention hockey?

Oh yeah, they spawned such experiments as Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, the Barenaked Ladies, and Alanis Morrisette.

23. some parts of Canada are kind of like England ...
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 06:56 PM by Lisa
Here I am, on the West Coast, surrounded by people with British accents, getting rained on.

(Actually the weather in Victoria is a bit drier and sunnier than in, say, Vancouver -- but there are a lot of British expatriates here, and the temperatures are moderate due to the maritime influence, so there are some similarities in the weather.)

Real British people will likely be a bit embarrassed by the pseudo-English act put on by the locals to fleece the tourists (tea and crumpets at the Empress, for example). But the double-decker buses are real.
