Just bought my son Green Day tickets
for his birthday. The concert is on 9/3. I'm not at all a fan, but my sister said she'd take them.

His first concert.

Ok... now I'm old.

1. No, you're not old.
You just bought your son tickets to his first concert, and it's Green Day. You're an awesome mom!

2. OH you should have gone yourself
Green Day has been vocally both Anti-Bush & Anti-War. I think AOL still has the Live8 performance of Green Day and outside of Pink Floyd, they were probably one of the best performances.

My friend and I got lawn seats for Green Day at the Merriweather. I'm so excited about going to see them.

BTW, I love that a couple of kids I know whose parents are pro-bush are big Green Day fans AND are getting the message!

best quote of the day from all of Live8 - that was from Billy Joe Armstrong right before that did "Holiday"

5. Blech.
No Green Day for me, thanks. They've disgraced the name of punk.
9/3, you say? What a coincidence! I'm going to a Rolling Stnes concert on the same date!

6. You're kidding me
First Green Day is a new generation of Punk and has constantly grown from their first stuff over a decade ago. Have you listened to the 'American Idiot' album? It's an amazing album that is borderline Rock Opera about the idiocy in American including Bush and his illegal war. If you check out their Live8 performance it was probably in the top 2 best performances of the day (surpassed only by legendary Pink Floyd). My favorite quote from that performance was by Billie Joe Armstrong (We're not Anti-American, we're anti-war).

As for Rolling Stones, they haven't had a decent album since Some Girls was released back in the 70's. I use to think the STones was a legendary band but if they keep putting crap pop music out they'll ruin what legend they have left.

13. I've listened to American Idiot
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 01:41 PM by catbert836
And I can safetly say its just pop passed off as punk to serve a mainsteam audience, as is most of their other stuff. Sorry, but I'm more of an old school punk fan, like the Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc. It's good that they're against the Chimp, but just their political opinions are not going to make me like them. Or maybe I'm just afraid of change. I don't know ;-)
I have to disagree with you about the Stones. Their last good album was "Emotional Rescue". I agree that they've become a novelty act, but they still have that spark that made them so popular in the sixties and seventies, which I'm sad to say Green Day has never had.
Peace, out.

17. You can't compare Green Day with groups like the Sex Pistols, Clash etc.
They are of a punk origin but I wouldn't classify them in the same category as the legendary punk bands of the 70s & 80s just like I wouldn't try to compare bands like Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighter etc with classic bands from the 70s like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc.

What's amazing about a group like Green Day is how powerful their message is in their music and it still gets mainstream play on both rock stations (hell even my local classic rock station) AND pop music stations.

And I know where you're coming from. You know what I told a co-worker about Green Day back when Dookie was released? I told him that Green Day's music would be future fodder for the K-Mart music bargin bin - seriously, not kidding you. I'm a child of classic rock growing up listening to my brothers LZ, Yes, Floyd, Crimson, Tull and so many other great classic rock albums. And I rarely listen to the radio so for me to catch on to a new group it sometimes takes me years, even a decade to recognize the group is great.

Green Day is punk in style but they aren't the answer to the next Sex Pistols, Ramones, Clash etc. I would probably say that those bands are more of an influence that Green Day has used in their music. But you're probably alot like me that if you hear the music and appreciate the message enough times you might discover the talent that this band has. I think with their release of 'American Idiot' Green Day has crossed that line from being the current hot band on MTV/mainstream music into what I believe will be this generations contribution to powerhouse band that will be appreciate by generations yet to come.

And I don't hate the Stones that much. But they make me wonder if I would have kept my diehard love affair for all things Led Zeppelin if Boneham hadn't died back 20 years ago and thus ending Led Zeppelin the band

24. Wellllllll.....
You're right in a lot of what you say. I certainly don't expect Green Day to be the next Sex Pistols/Clash/Ramones, but I'm just fed up when they claim to be punk and their music is really 10% Punk with 40% Mainstream Rock and 50% pop. (At least, that's what they sound like to me). Another reason I don't like Green Day could be because there isn't a radio station in my hometown that doesn't play their records to death (exempting the Classic Rock and Country Stations).
True, Green Day does get their message to a mainstream audience but I have trouble believing people actually understand it. For example, I go to a Catholic school, where most of the students are hardcore Republicans, if they care about politics at all. Since the environment is so repressive, my classmates tend to get more into pop culture than kids from other schools. It's so ridiculous when I see, as I did during the last election cycle, kids with Bush-Cheney buttons on their backpacks screaming they don't want to be a part of the redneck agenda. It's hilarious, but sad.

22. you are a wonderful mom, this 27 year old is pea green with envy
Green Day's American Idiot was the best album to come out last year.

While I am a fan of old school punk, and I know Green Day is more mainstream, they can atleast play their instruments.

Every live set is tight, no mistakes, no screw ups. I can't say that for the live fotage I've seen of either the Sex Pistols or the Ramones. Then again I think that they may have been on WAY more drugs, but still.

Green Day is one of the best rock bands of the day and I hate to see people dissing on them.

It is still a wonderful gift and your son is lucky.
