"To find a girl's faults, praise her to her friends."
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 02:51 PM by redqueen
I've seen this quote ascribed to Ben Franklin, and also the ubiquitous Anonymous.

My gripe is this: WTF ... "girls"? What, "boys" don't do this? (Yeah, some lie to themselves, but they're no different... fuckers.)

:grr:

3. I still consider myself a girl
I'm a mom and an adult, but I still feel youthful and carefree at times and don't want to deal with all that womanhood entails. (my husband is still a boy on 'boy's golf day' or times when he and our son are playing basket ball outside 'boys time' where 'girls are not allowed'.

Ben Franklin pisses you off?
That's....um....different.

Plus, I doubt that "guys are still spewing it", as it's the first time I remember ever hearing such a statement. I think you're just looking for a little bit more (in this case) than actually exists.

Also, you need not ask my approval if something pisses you off. I neither hold your mood in approval nor disapproval. I merely thought that you were applying 20th (or 21st) century standards to an 18th century dead guy.

51. well I don't know any guys who say that kind of stuff currently
and most of my WOMEN friends, don't talk trash about each other for the most part. I do think guys joke more about their buddies' limitations sometimes, as a "joking with the guys" bonding- ritual kind of thing. At least that's what I have seen with some groups of men that I have spent time with.

but that kind of thinking can be tedious, yes.

16. To be fair, if it IS Ben Franklin...
seriously, we're talking about 18th Century here. There was no such thing as political correctness.

Yes, it's absolutely wrong by today's standards, but women were still property back then. Being referred to as "girls" was probably progressive.

It'd be like if any of us Americans got offended when we look back on some of the demeaning comments made by the British back when we were just their colonies. It's a complete lack of historical perspective.

36. Yes and no
Depends on how you interpret it.

One meaning would be that if you ask a womans female friends what her faults are. They will not tell you. Only by duplicitous means can you get them to reveal any of her faults.

35. I'd say 'girls' is probably correct in this situation.
I like to think that 'women' aren't quite so petty.

If there can be a host of ways to separate the men from the boys, it seems resonable that there are ways to separate the women from the girls as well.

Such as 'the girls and I went to the lake'.

As far as Ben Franklin.. we must be doing pretty good as a society if you have to look back 200 years ago for things to be 'offended' by or else you have a lot of spare time.
