2. Gave it a 3- but not a fair rating.
I found some parts of the movie SO well done that I was actually sitting forward in my seat- either mesmerized by special effects or the music.

I felt that other parts dragged, and could have easily been left on the cutting room floor.

Interesting movie adaptation, and great casting- especially for the boy who played Charlie, imo.

5. The movie was well done.
It kept closer to the actual story line. Willy wonka was presented as a much more darker charcter in this movie than the last. I really enjoyed seeing the movie.

6. The only thing that keeps it from getting a perfect score (imo) is that
they didn't leave much room for a sequel as written by Roald Dahl.

Personally I loved the whole movie. I had a blast watching it.

I don't know that the background on Wonka was necessary, but I have no objection to it at all.

I had more fun with this than any movie I've seen in a theater in years.

8. Depp was spot on as the chocolate, but not children, loving Willy Wonka

He played up the anti social, paranoid yet brilliant aspects of the character superbly.

I'm still amazed that he starred in 21 Jump Street. Although, even then, he was someone worth watching. MKJ

12. I have to admit, I thought he was too young to pull it off ...

The book (and the first film) had Wonka as being older. But after seeing the film, I think Depp did an excellent job of showing Wonka as a disturbed genius. They even confronted the age thing directly (that scene where he finds a white hair). In that context, it makes sense that he'd have an irrational overreaction.

11. I still like the earlier movie, but ...
... they sure did a much better job of pointing out the negative side of consumerism (and corporations in general) this time around. Often they just showed a visual to get their point across, but still pretty effective. So, just for that, I'm giving Tim Burton a strong "4" -- higher than I rated the first film. He still let Wonka off the hook for firing his workers, but maybe that was intentional, since it happens all the time in the real world? And it's always good to see Christopher Lee, even though I was only so-so on the Wonka family subplot.

Aside from the sketch on SNL where Al Gore portrayed Willy's disgruntled accountant brother ... I think this was the first time people onscreen suggested (as hinted in the book) that Wonka's factory would NOT be a fun place to work!
