Out here in the Bay Area (and probably the rest of the US, but I live here so drop it) we have groups of people who will only eat organic, non processed foods. That's fine. I try to eat healthy too, but I can't always make everything from scratch.
Anyway, any time I eat something premade, I get this lecture from them saying how bad anything but hommade food is for you, blah blah blah.
Well guess what, I'm in perfect fucking health, I have no problem burning fat and I DON'T ALWAYS EAT ORGANIC!!!!
Doug Henning? Only ate organic. Guess what happened? HE DIED! OF CANCER!
Except it wasn't the cancer that killed him, it was the chemo. What would have been routine for any of us, killed him because the shock of the impurities turned his body against him.
So Organic Fundies out there, get used to the fact that we're not all going to pay $25 per pound for fresh, organic, only reverse osmosis fed strawberries.

I feel the need to point out that chemo isn't really routine for anyone. :)

3. a healthy variety of good food is enough |
|
lean protein, right fat, right carb, high fiber, low salt.....
it doesn't have to be organic.

5. True - all about moderation |
|
When people ask me whats the best diet (because of my invisible TV show I always get asked this question ;) ) I recommend South Beach. Why? Because it's the only 'fad' diet that's not a fad. It's all about moderation. Good lean protein choices, good carb choices and good fat choices.

9. Oh yeah, Arcata is interesting to say the least |
|
It was hard to find a restaraunt that served meat in the downtown area...

10. You can find meat there |
|
but fast food?
Fugheddaboutit.
One time I was on the plaza and I saw a car pull up and ask a local where the McDonalds was.
Local: Um, there isn't one.
Foreigner: Uh...ok, is there a Carl's Jr?
Local: Oh no.
Foreigner: Where is the nearest fast food place of any kind?
Local: Um, get on the freeway, and go north about 5 miles?
There's a law against chain restaurants. And no, I'm not kidding.

11. Must have been my luck, but I was looking for breakfast |
|
And the first 3 places I went to were vegetarian only. Finally, I passed a place that had a sign that said "meat served here."

Golden Harvest next to the late, lamented Arcata theater (where I saw Star Wars I, Fight Club, Crouching Tiger, and a dozen other films.)
That's the place for some American breakfast.

16. They actually had very good breakfasts |
|
And a very cool 40's retro diner look to the place...
Actually I would love to live in Arcata, except that I would be identified as a Conservative there because I:
- Eat Meat - Wear clothes based on their look - Only drive a Prius, which is still part of the problem, not the solution...

*Eat conventional produce
*Eat fish
*Eat dairy and eggs
*Am OK with responsible application of chemical fertilizers
*Am OK with responsible logging
*Am OK with responsible hunting
*Am OK with responsible grazing
*Don't smoke pot
*Don't think hemp is the entire solution to the world's problems
*Don't think western culture is worse than many other cultures
*Think middle class white kids who bash all western culture are assholes
*Think middle class white kids who pretend to be Native American, Tibetan, Japanese, Jamaican, or whatever are assholes
*Think Bob Marley is overrated
*Think a significant portion of the Earth First crowd needs to get a life and go protest real environmental crimes like mountaintop removal instead of sitting in the community forest smoking pot.
I may as well go join up with Hitler and make it official. :P

8. I eat only Organic but I keep |
|
my mouth shut when it comes to what other people eat..to each his own.
We're all different and what works for one doesn't necessarily cut it with someone else.
I'm just glad there are choices. Sorry, your friends(?) are so preachy to ya.
And, that's a blessing to be "in perfect health"! :toast:

13. There are times when organic is *worse*. |
|
No kidding. I'm thinking of something like, say, peanut butter where you *want* the peanuts treated with antifungal compounds, because one of the molds that likes peanuts makes aflatoxin which is waaaaay worse for you than the antifungal (even if it's one of the manganese-based antifungals, which are pretty awful).
For context, I don't put any pesticides on my small garden (have used tobacco and garlic juices in the past), and I wash store produce obsessively. I'm not a fan of artificial pesticides, and I think we're running a massive and dangerous experiment in combinatorial toxicology on ourselves, with the mix of unnatural crap that finds its way into our bodies. That having been said, neither antibiotics, nor dental fillings, nor eyeglasses, nor hernia surgery are "natural" either. But I wouldn't want to give them up simply because they're unnatural.
It's short sighted in the extreme to think that all application of unnatural technology is a bad thing. Hell, agriculture itself is unnatural, in the sense that we (humans) contrived it.
So, I guess I'm saying you have a good point.
