1. set a limit, never bid higher than that, enter it as a proxy and you never have to worry. If you don't get it, you weren't going to anyway 'cuz someone was willing to pay more.
2. If you HAVE to have the item and want to get it for a reasonable amount, become a sniper yerself, saves on those nasty bidding wars. I'd suggest a service, but, well, I don't know that this is appropriate.
disclaimer, I sold long before I was a buyer and I LOVED snipers. Their bid always pushed the price up some, instead of leaving it low.

are placed within the last 90 to 120 seconds. I set up 3 or 4 bids and fire them off in sequence. Ebay will not allow you to raise the bid on yourself and unless the sniper is using an automatic bid program, they will not have time to get their 'winning' bid in.
