Goats, cows offered for Chelsea
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/africa/07/27/clinton.kenya.ap/

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- A Kenyan says he offered Bill Clinton 40 goats and 20 cows for his daughter's hand in marriage five years ago -- and is still waiting for an answer.

Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor told the East Africa Standard newspaper last week that he wrote to Clinton asking for Chelsea's hand in 2000 during the then-president's visit to Kenya.

Bill should take it, if the guy will take Hillary off his hands too.

That's a fair deal.
If he throws in some land on the beach.

6. I don't know about the Kenyan rate of exchange ...
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 03:48 PM by Lisa
But in Botswana, further south, that's quite a substantial amount. If you had that many head of livestock there, you'd be quite well-off. Let's say, it would be equivalent to offering to buy the young couple a $200k home, in our society.

In the industrialized world, with changing economic conditions, and women now having careers (and even being heads of household), the "dowry" concept has fallen out of favour ... but before we laugh, remember that many of our female ancestors, as recently as the last century, were symbolically "exchanged" for goods, land, and the more modern cash payment. (In our family, there was at least one "mail-order bride" negotiated that way.)

I'm certain Mr. Chepkurgor meant this in a respectful way. Wouldn't it be cool if the ex-Pres wrote him a polite rejection letter so he wouldn't lose face.
