They do the eating... their prices kept going up, their limitations on the "free" support make it worthless and I couldn't even report a bug to them without telling me of their 'free support' restrictions. (I said I'd already fixed the problem on my own; I was reporting a bug, this is my hardware, here is how it happens, please fix it.")
I use Fedora now and the convience factor is 97% identical. The remaining 3% wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Free updates too, via CLI command. "yum update".

Linux maybe has more applications and supports more hardware out of the box.
I really really love BSD ports for installing software. It eliminates all the headaches of missing dependencies.
