Who would win in a civil war? (note, not meant to be taken too seriously)
The blue states or the red states?

1. I dunno.
I've wondered myself. The GOP has been quite successful at moving military resources to the Red States, and I don't think they'd hesitate to nuke "the libruls."

On the other hand, the divide in this country is more Urban vs Rural, which puts Urbanites at a distinct disadvantage. Why? Our side has distinct targets to be captured. We have all of the major cities. What do they have - the old cotton gin? The antique store on town square? The honkey tonk bar on Old Highway 6 headin' outta town? They've got not much in terms of symbolic targets.

Then there are resources and foreign aid to consider. You can bet that we'd have pretty much the entire civilized world on our side.

If we threaten to cut 'em off, they're bound to surrender.

5. remember we have them flanked
if they concnetrate on Chicago and New York City, they'll be left vulnerable from California in the west.

but they could split chicago from new york by amassing troops in Ohio and Indiana.

We could hold them at washington DC.

Texas would be difficult.

Blue's strategy would be keep the reds at bay while california comes at them from the west.

8. When your divisions are 2000 miles apart, enfilading fire won't work
They're not so much flanked as we are divided. Of course here in Houston, 20 blocks away from Enron headquarters, I'm somewhat behind enemy lines. Guess that makes me a spy.

9. theres a lot of population in our small space
NYC 8 million people
Chicago, a hell of a lot of people.

California would find little resistance in the mountains, and they would amass territory fast.

10. Alaska would be our Finland.
I guess I'm thinking of southern Illinois, too. It would fall fast, Chicago laid seige to, relief columns from Milwaukee ambushed as they caravaned down the coast. But the real nightmare would be the trench warfare along the Michigan-Ohio front, gunboat battles along Lake Erie, house to house fighting as General Granholm's corps pushed into the Cleveland suburbs.

Is Puerto Rico in this?

It will take them several weeks to arrive. If Chicago and DC can hold out, we can waste them from the west

36. Southern IL won't fall
Get some good guerrilla fighters down there and that would be a major thorn in the side of any force moving north into central Illinois. It would also make a good staging area for raids into Kentucky and the Ozarks.

12. I think we'd be very vulnerable
in the west.

There's a lot of open ground to cover between california and any targets in Utah or Arizona.

Reno and Las Vegas would probably be capturable, especially with the blue support there, but we'd be pretty hard pressed to stage a good land invasion with no cover.

theyd be crushed easily by the armies advancing from the west coast.

TX might put up a fight, but the red states would be more worried about NYC, Chicago and DC.

14. I think they could
just mass in Utah, and take us out on our way across nevada. Ditto for Idaho.

I think we could hold the west coast, but that would be about it.

There are also a lot of red forces in California, and it's hard to say what that would do.

37. Not a lot of population.
Capture Las Vegas, Reno and Denver and then concentrate on controlling the major transportation lines only. Let them have the open spaces, not alot of places to hide and the areas were they can, can be quaritines.

winner would be none though.

They have no moral boundaries, the higher up the more extreme...gives them way more ways to choose from. WMD, Camps, Genocide? wouldn't put it past the USreds. USblues wouldn't be blue if they stooped on that level.

4. Hmm...
The problem is that so many Dems seem to embrace gun control. Reds actively encourage it, but many Dems seem to favor more legislation, so I'd gather that the average Republican household was better armed than the average Democrat. Of course, here in the South, that may not hold true.

lack discipline. They'd be reduced to looter status quickly because they eat their own. It's like in LA in 1992, when the Korean shot back and threatened force, they moved along quickly.

cities would be a liability. Once the food's cut off and public sanitation goes away, look for massive amounts of rioting and disease. I can't imagine a city like LA with no shipments of food for even a week.

"independent" "true to original Constitutional intent" Red State lifestyles, their economies would quickly turn into the backwater, third-world economies that they really are. We might let them go quietly and swirl around for a few years, but sooner or later they're going to need people with brains. How much of the nations computing power would side with them?

Anyone ever see the great Ken Russel film "Billion Dollar Brain?" In it a crazy rich Texan tries to take out the Soviet Union in a single strike. Trouble is, his billion dollar computer which is organizing the effort has an unfortunate bug in it. If you were making that film today, the Texas idiot would attack Blue States and probably have the same problems. Who from Portland, Seattle or Silicon Valley is going to move to Houston, the new capital of the Confederacy of Dunces States?

47. Hmm
The red states have the entire atlantic fleet and most of the non-nuclear Air-Force, the stealth fleet, and the all important South Dakota.

Of course, if we can get to Colorado Springs quickly (already a very blue area), we get the all important SAC (our ICBM's). Course we can't use them because they are in S. Dakota.

Blue states have the Pacific fleet, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean fleets -- so better navy assets. We have a good sized force of Marines at Pendleton (counteracted by Camp Lejun in NC). Mirmar no longer exists, and I don't know of any other large army bases.

We would lose, but have enough to hang onto CA most likely. The real problem would be holding onto the eastern seaboard. Given that they essentially have no or few assets, we probably can't.
