16. no, just getting started on pLanning
we spent 2 days haggLing over our destination... and we chose phiLLy over montreaL (going for the touristy vacation, rather than wicked-bendah vacation).

i know they have a train system there - wiLL we better off parking the car for our stay, and pubLic transport it everywhere?
if so or not, what area do you reccomend we try to get a hoteL in?

18. Yes, there is a train station
It would really depend on how long you plan to be here and what you want to do while in Philly.

Might I suggest you do it before Sept 18th - they have a good "Visit Philly" package that includes 2 nights for the price of one and free parking

11. for a dude ranch vacation
all the websites that list "what to bring" put boots at #1.

My SO already has a pair of ropers, and I own NOTHING that would be appropriate for riding a horse (which I haven't done since the mid-1980s). My usual high-heeled summer sandel would NOT cut it, and the websites specifically say NO SNEAKERS.

I was in Dallas, working literally next door to two boot stores, so I figured "where better?" and bought me some.

Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 11:37 AM by Jokerman
Not that I have anything against cowboys or boots, it's just that, as someone who wouldn't even wear shoes if I could get away with it, I've always found cowboy boots to be one of the most uncomfortable things humans ever invented.

36. Good Answer!
I see so many posers wearing cowboy boots even though they wouldn't know one end of a horse from the other, it never occurred to me that you were actually going to use them for riding.

Didn't want to break the $100 mark, since, as LynneSin points out, I'm from Philly, where they are not generally considered de riguer.

Mmm.. Tony Lamas.........

22. The brand doesn't realy matter...the effect on the guys will be the same.
Well, some guys. Probably a lot of guys. Some percentage, anyway, of guys do pay attention when they see a woman wearing boots.

Or if you happen to be one of those women who likes women, I'd bet the effect will be the same on your, ah, audience. Well, anyway.

13. Are they useful?
I mean, are they designed for certain types of work, or terrain? I've always wondered about that. Cowboy hats puzzle me, too. Do they have certain uses that other hats don't have? (I mean in modern society)?

17. I'll report back on whether or not they keep me on my horse
Fortunately, I learned to ride as a kid, so I'm okay on the basics.

I'm a little nervous for my city-bred SO, who has never been on a horse. But we'll see....

19. Next Fall I am walking the streets where I'm a committeewoman
I am delivering his quotes on birth control to every single house in my (largely Catholic) area. They might be against abortion, but the size of their families (rarely more than 2 kids) tells me they wouldn't take too kindly to a new baby in the family every year or two.

Won't wear my cowboy boots, but I'll be burning up shoe leather nonetheless.

29. No, actually, they're mens boots. But Redstone says
that regardless, guys dig cowboy boots on women look hot, so I'm taking him at his word. My SO has already implied as much!

They had some very cute women's styles at "Boot Town" in Farmer's Branch, TX, but my foot size (I'm 5'11") mandated a guy's boot, sad to say, so my selection was limited.

26. I have a pair, too. But then I live in Texas. I think it's a law.
But mine are ropers, which are just loafers with a lot of ankle support. :D

Lucchese too. They're nice, but I got them on sale. :)

30. Got mine at "Boot Town" in Farmer's Branch
Was working in an office building next door, had 1/2 hour to spare before I was due at the airport, and figured "where better to buy boots for my trip then in TEXAS?"

They were the nicest people! A young kid with hipster eyeglasses helped me with my selection. I looked at the VERY urban glasses (small black rectangles don't look real cowpokey to me, but what do I know) and asked him if he himself rode -- boy, was he insulted! Of course he rode!!! He proceeded to take the time to make sure I got a perfect fit, I packed them right in my suitcase, and flew back to the land where Boot Stores are not commonplace.

31. I can't remember where I got mine.
Some place in San Antonio.

If you like the boots, you should have some custom-made. Dave Little in San Antonio does nice work. There are others, too.

For cowboy boots, you can't beat Texas.

35. Man, custom made is SO out of my league
I'm just a Philly girl who wouldn't know a two-step from...well, whatever else you dance to wearing cowboy boots.

But who knows - I'm wearing a cowboy hat on last year's Christmas card (in a photo of us at the Grand Canyon) so stranger things have happened.

I figured why buy boots in New Jersey (the only place I know of with a decent selection is in Deptford, NJ) when I'm right there in Cowboy Country!

33. Just basic leather for a horse amateur like me
It's kind of suede-y looking, but it was good looking, basic, and on sale.

Saw some cute one made of ostrich, but WAY out of my price range, plus I couldn't rationalize that the leather would be available anyway as a byproduct of beef.

Got a really nice hat in Tombstone for $11 on my last vacation to hide my puffy eyes and swollen sinuses. Glad I did now that I see what they charge for them.
