3. Nausicaa was his 1st and (IMO) his best piece. Though Spirited Away is my

all time favorite film. I skipped school one day when I was 12 and watched HBO all day. They played what I later learned was the much butchered American release of Nausicaa. I happened to tape it. Butchered or not it was unlike anything I had ever seen. 5 Years later when I saw Akira I knew there was something going on that, as an American, I was unable to be exposed to. Now we have the pristine original work in all it's glory!

I must say that Castle of Cagliostro is the only Miyazaki film I haven't seen - other than his current Howl's Moving Castle.

8. Oh yeah. We bought "Spirited" as soon as it came out.

Still need to pick up "Mononoke", though. We also liked "Castle in the Sky". We also have "My Neighbor Totoro", which might be my all-time favorite.

You need to get "Howl" when it comes out on DVD, or better yet, see it on the screen if it's playing in your town. His movies look FANTASTICin a theater.

Despite a moment of DMRS (Disneyesque Magical Resurrection Syndrome), Nausicaa is a stunning picture. A third-generation untranslated video-dub was my introduction to Japanese animation, and I was floored by its intelligence, its intensity, its beautiful design work, and its lovely score. (And, as a kid, shocked by its violence, though anyone who's seen more than an hour's worth of anime knows even the horrifying bullet strikes were relatively tame stuff even then. And just imagine a Star Blazers fan's introduction to Arrivederci Yamato with no warning about the ending...)

The original "Americanized" version, Warriors Of The Wind, came out a few months after that viewing--and once I saw that I swore I'd never watch an "Americanized" version of anything ever again. (Fortunately, not every anime has been so utterly butchered and hideously dubbed, and my vow has been broken; Full Metal Alchemist is impressing the hell out of me. I still prefer subtitles, though.)

Too bad plans for Nausicaa 2 collasped, but Miyazaki's manga version of Nausicaa goes far, far beyond the film. It's a true masterpiece, and it's decently translated. I highly recommend it to all.

Strangely enough, I haven't seen any other Miyazaki film (aside from those pieces of Castle of Cagliostro that were used to create the Dragon's Lair-style arcade videogame Cliff Hanger).

I'll have to start remedying that immediately.
