The thug life
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 11:41 PM by jiacinto
Is there a magazine that cators to muggers and assailants?

Do they have a professional association?

I wonder if they learn how to mug and destory peoples' lives.

4. So you got fucking jacked
Welcome to America.

I got robbed several times growing up in NYC. It was part of the game. I even got stabbed during a robbery when I fought the three guys jacking me (had a little shorty with me and couldn't just stand there). So fucking what? Life goes on. I laugh about it now - hell, I laughed about it when my people came to see me in Booth Memorial. Buck up, dog. The guy took your wallet and didn't otherwise harm you, yes? OK, some psychological fear, but you need to get a grip on it. Maybe post after self-indulgent post in the lounge ain't the best way to do that. You're fixating.

Much worse has happened to other people, and overall your experience really ain't that bad. The mugger didn't "ruin" your life, nor was he necessarily waiting to "kill" you or anybody else, as your "poem" says. You got jacked. Deal.

46. the predator-prey relationship
is central to nature. unless you are trying to say that it is natural for people to steal from eachother, as it is natural for a wolf to eat a rabbit (sucks for the rabbit, good for the entire system) I suggest you find a new metaphor.

49. I would tend to...
agree though. It is a predator-prey thing. It's natural for people to steal. Natural as rain on a goddamn Sunday morning.

Humans are, by default, greedy, selfish, evil creatures. We are genetically hardwired to survive. Survival at the cost of anything else. While this is eliminated to a certain extent by proper parenting, for most people it is reality. You fuck over anyone and everyone in order to survive. That survival instinct eventually warps and twists and bang.. you are mugging people in alleys.

51. ahh, but the counter arguement
is that the predator is neccesary for the health of the entire population of the prey. that doesn't translate here, in my opinion. it may be perfectly natural to steal from your fellow man, but it does not serve the purpose of the greater society.

without predators, rabbits take over, eat all the food and die.

without violent theft, would humans?

55. Population control...
Theres natural balance for you. It's not pretty but... personally I'd sooner have muggers and wars keeping the population in check as opposed to Mother Nature cleaning house with a super-virus.

Also, it keeps the economy going. Cops and private security are big business. Thats a lot of people who are employed. It's all part of the balance.

without crime, cops unemployed

eventually of course though, all those unemployed law personel will turn to crime and the cycle will continue.

A nuclear war, biological weapons attack, chemical weapons attack, cluster bombs, land mines, etc., are all preferrable to Mother Nature organically ridding herself of its most worrisome parasite... man? That's interesting.

5. Their lives
Are in shambles as well. They must have some sort of lousy background in their life to resort to such things. Look at the inner city. These people are victims of things that are out of their control, like their socio-economic status and stuff like that. I'm not saying that there is justification in their destruction and law breaking, it's just you have to empathize with them a little. I grew up in the city. It hurts to see people on both sides get ruined by lousy homes and abusive friends and family. It really does.

42. In order to preserve
your own life you need to keep maintaining your own karma. Try and overcome this excessive anger. I know it is hard, but you must try. That criminal who mugged you is going to keep on living in his own skin. The energy he sends out with his stupid acts is going to keep on biting him in the ass twice as hard. If you succumb to his angry energy then you lose. Don't let him win. Material things can be replaced, new jobs can be found. You own soul needs to be tended to. Anger isn't the way.
Peace and a hug:hug:

12. I would suggest you discuss this with closer friends than here on DU
people seem to enjoy trivializing what has happened to you and telling you to suck it up and get over it. I understand that this is not about losing a little money, this was about the fact that you were violated. This criminal put you in a position of absolute powerlessness and it was traumatic. You seem afraid and agitated right now and you have good reason to be both. Find the people you can count on most, they can better help you deal with this.

21. The only one trivializing it
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 12:33 AM by markses
Is jiacinto, with his 45 posts on the topic. For a failry minor incident, you can expect folks to start getting irritated or at least tired at about thread 35 on a single mugging. By Thread 40, people start saying "Get over it." By thread 45, most reasonable folks will feel that they are being played for sympathy where they've already given it, and the eye-rolling begins.

Proportion and Perspective.

They're helpful. We got people on DU getting called up to go to Iraq, we got people with families in a combat zone. I think 5-10 threads is even excessive for this one mugging - and all the (increasingly) blind and generalized and worrisome recrimination trivializes itself when it loses its sense of proportion and perspective.

Look at jiacinto's question here: Do thugs have a magazine or a professional association? And it's other folks who are trivializing his experience? Please.

In the general scheme of things, it was a minor incident. You were robbed at gunpoint. So are many people. Not all feel the need to inflate it into a major life event. Is this thread a joke? Are you joking in the first post?

58. first the cockroaches, now the muggers......
c'mon carlos, what did you move to florida for in the first place....you knew this was a state filled with rugged individualism...really...we have alligators, angry retirees from 'jersey, swamps, 90 degree humid winters, roaches the size of a volkswagon, bikers, tourists from all over, bad schools, low wages, a corrupt governer....really carlos, if you think it sucks in miami, you havent lived 'till you take a tour of daytona beach...crack capitol of the southeastern seaboard...better yet, try some pipe wielding thugs from jacksonvile...and i spelled it that way for a reason...or even better, take a fun trip to the panhandle and see firsthand what inbreeding does...dueling banjo music and ned beatty images come to mind..."whatcha mean yer a middle-o-da-road librulll...only gowd librull's a dead'un!!!!".......

i really do feel for your brush with danger carlos, but the crime that bit you in south florida will find you wherever you are...idaho, montana, hawaii...some desert isle with the skipper and gilligan....it happened carlos...it happens to a lot of people just like you and it will happen until the sun swallows the earth billions of years from now. go to a phycologist or a councelor and get some help...or just simply write it off mentally as something that happened and be better prepared next time.

thugs prey on fear carlos...they do not generally prey on the confident. that thug is not waiting around the corner for you again, despite what you may think. he is long gone...he got what he wanted and left...he may have even been jacked himself and left for dead somewhere...that is the nature of the beast. my advice...learn from your experience and be prepared next time...carry some pepper spray...turn on more outside lights or put in brighter bulbs...look more carefully at your surroundings...as a last resort...get a pistol and a concealed weapons permit...something easy to get here.....

there have been sooooo many others here who have given you advice...take some of the suggestions to heart, just stop acting like an invalid agoraphobe because you became a statistic...get on with your life.......

some "professional thugs"....

girlie girl thugs.....

some cartoon thugs....

some bone thugs....

some muslim thugs.....

and finally, some corporate thugs....

I live in Florida. St. Pete to be specific.

What happened exactly? Like I said I sort of missed the whole story.

I have personally been robbed at gunpoint only twice. Once at knifepoint.

That's not counting the times I've had my ass kicked or been shot at just for the hell of it.

43. dude, Carlos
I know it sucks (yes, I've been there. I live in a part of DC you've never been to, I promise you that) and have worked in places you don't ever want to go to. and sometimes you get mugged. That's life in the big city. I know it's traumatizing, and it sucks to lose your wallet, BUT IT'S JUST A WALLET. leather, paper and plastic. you can always make more money, get more credit cards, and anothe bad photo for your license. it is not nearly as easy to get a new arm or kidney. you did the right thing, gave up the cash and lived to fight another day. STOP STRESSING ABOUT IT already. Welcome to urban america. you've learned not to carry valuables with you in your neighborhood. if you're going to let one incident that didn't involve you getting hurt, or even seriously threatened (I just reread your original post, and you simply said "he pulled a gun" this has happened to me twice in the past two years. You give up some slightly valuable things and go home. don't let the bastards keep you from living your life. don't be timid, own yourself and your space.

and yes, by the way, I have been assaulted (it didn't work out for him, I was a wee bit larger and won the fight) it happens. it sucks, but it's part of the price for living in an urban area. you learn to deal. if you can't, then we need to take up a collection for you to move to northern alaska already.

Ward 1 (Adams Morgan/Mt. Pleasant, but only the part of Mt. Pleasant W of 16th Street)
Ward 2 (everywhere)
Ward 4 (Crestwood, the Gold Coast, Chevy Chase, and Takoma Park, but nowhere near Petworth)
Ward 5 (Brookland by Catholic Univesrity only, maybe by Michigan Avenue and S. Dakota Avenue. Most definitely not south of Rhode Island Avenue)
Ward 6 (only on the Waterfront or Capitol Hill, but still I'd be hard presed to live there).

I would NEVER live in Wards 7 or 8.

56. why feel bad?
I choose to live where I do for various reasons that are between me and my god. i'm not complaining, simply pointing out that others deal with what you are dealing with and can move on. chin up, hoss.

Did you know my parents are buried in Rock Cemetary and until my brother moved to IA and I to DC that our family had been in DC for three generations?

53. Seriously Carlos, I'm just going to be completely blunt here.
GET OVER IT. I was ROBBED AT GUNPOINT when I was the assistant manager at a convenience store in inner-city Minneapolis. It was a Caucasian male in a black ski mask with a .38 caliber pistol. I testified at his trial, and he got 25 to 50. BUT I DIDN'T LET IT RUIN MY LIFE. I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. I was shaken up for a few days, but I executed my robbery training procedures PERFECTLY. It's something that happened, but again, I didn't let it ruin me. I tried not to let it be a traumatic experience, and probably there was a little trauma involved, but probably not even as much as my most embarrassing moment in high school.

Just quit wallowing in it. Seriously. If you want to yell at me, fine. I was in the SAME postition you were in, so don't tell me how I don't know how you feel, or something.

61. Get the gun. Get training. Learn when you can legally kill someone.
And waste the next person who you can legally kill. You'll feel much better.

64. Great advice...not
As a gunowner, I find your advice to Carlos disturbing. By all appearances, Carlos is nowhere near stable enough about this to handle a firearm. Remember Bernard Goetz. He shot up a bunch of "thugs" too...

62. If one dwells & obsesses, it will burn a hole in your psyche
When I was young, I used to a dwell on the harms that people did to me and, ultimately, it did not help. It made the problems linger. Try to find something else to focus your time and your thoughts on. Best wishes.

68. muggers and assailants are part of the Local Assholes Union #1248
It's a big tent organization. They've got thieves, road-ragers and general run-of-the-mill assholes as well.
