I returned to the mountain today from Greenville to sad news.
The three McCall brothers who run the grading company that takes care of our private gravel roads, our driveways, and any projects needing a back-hoe, track-hoe, motor-grader, dozer, or truckload of crush-and-run, are now only two. Dale was killed yesterday in an on-the-job accident. Details are sketchy, but it involved a dump truck. Dale had a bad leg and limped very profoundly. He had an engineering degree, but often drove the dump trucks and heavy equipment for their thriving business.
The other two brothers are close neighbors .. good men, too. Dale lived a few miles away, toward Lake Toxaway, in Quebec, NC. Dale delivered a load of crush-and-run for my washed-out driveway (TS Dennis) a few weeks ago. We had a nice visit while his brother David spread the crushed gravel with a Caterpillar.

RIP Dale McCall

1. sorry to hear about this
Particularly devastating when fatal accidents happen in small communities. Everybody in town is bound to know the person. (We had an accident up-Island earlier in the month -- my dad hasn't lived here for decades, but still knew the family from way back.)
