Need some feedback
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 10:07 PM by Maestro
Despite growing through a rough time with my grandfather, I can always count on my kids to cheer me up. They are the next generation. One of my growing interests is photography. I just bought a very nice Digital SLR camera. I was practicing with black and white portraits and I would like some feeback. I posted this in the photography group but it didn't get much traffic so I am posting here. Thanks.

My kids in black and white

1. I love b&w photography.
Those are nice shots. I think b&w brings out more somehow. Maybe because the mind has to fill in more than in color shots.

I'm sorry about your grandfather. He seems like a wonderful man.

2. nice pics
but whatever you're focusing on, you need to shift the focus up a bit, because you cut off the tops of both heads.

So, if you're trying to center the face, center the eyes maybe? I don't really know much about photography, so the subtle parts I may have missed, but I did notice the tops of both heads are out of the pic.

:)

4. Thanks Kenneth ken
That situation ocurred because I was trying to capture moving objects. Do you know how hard it is to get a three and five year old to pose? ;) Thanks though. I do need to work on framing the shot.

10. oh
well in that case, those are amazingly good pics. I've tried taking pics of my cats when they were moving, not even running but moving anyway, and mine all came out worthless.

6. I don't know much about photography but those are beautiful pics
of your kids.
I read your thread about you grampa and I'm so sorry you're going through this ordeal. I've been there twice in the past year. It hurts badly.

You are so fortunate, though, that you have your children to remind you that life does go on. I'm sure you'll hear his laugh in their's and see his twinkle in their eyes. It never really ends. It just takes different forms. My heart is with you.

Photos of kids are much better if they're not 'posed' natural outdoor ones work much better :)

11. SO beautiful! What sweeties! :^) Wanna see a pic of mine? I'm no shutterbu
but I am proud of these shots (despite being washed out), done with a digital camera that I have _no_ clue how to work.

18. They busted the fire hydrant 3 days ago. I have to get them another one
seeing as how we have a month to 6 weeks of hot weather left.

Crazy kids beat it with a rubber mallet until it cracked. (Note: they call it "the pound hammer", but then, aren't they all?)

Be a big dork and don't care what anyone else thinks. That has been my motto since I turned 30. I just don't care anymore what ya'll think... I'm having fun.

19. These are pretty good...
I don't object to the cutting off of the tops of their heads, but if you print these you will want to crop them at the bottom I think. It makes the top look deliberate. For instance, I'd crop your daughter's picture just at or below the chin, I'd leave the width of the photo about the same. In that picture your focus should be on her eyes-nose-mouth. Cropping a photo is a legitimate technique, so it's not like you're cheating or anything! Both of your kids are gorgeous - and VERY photogenic!

22. Thanks for the tip
I will certainly do so when I print these for framing. My wife is making a special photo wall of all black and white photos of the kids. She is doing the painting of the wall and the setting up of the frames on the wall and I will supply the pics. These will probably be the first two.
