1. I assume you mean gospel music? |
|
Yes, this Buddhist/Taoist loves gospel music once in a while. And I've been known to listen to Country music for as long as 12 minutes at a stretch. (That 12 minutes is usually enough to last me for a couple years.) There was a gospel piece in the movie Oh Brother that I really loved. I had to run out and buy the soundtrack just for that gospel tune.

2. Why do so many gospel singers seem, let's say, gay? |
|
Or is it just my imagination?

I have some CDs. I listen to Negro spirituals often. (And that is the correct musical term -- Negro spirituals). I don't listen to any other type of religious music, unless you count Handel's Messiah, or some Bach.
When I teach about Harriet Tubman, I often play spirituals for the students. Many spirituals were codes used by the Underground Railroad.
My parents went to a Paul Robeson concert once, in the 1950's. It was just over the Canadian border. They said the FBI was there, taking down peoples' license numbers. Not that that has anything to do with it. They were just supportive of Robeson.

Yeah, many spirituals were codes. The truth is, anyone with feeling can sing spiritual songs.

9. Some of the best voices are in Gospel |
|
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 01:00 AM by WeRQ4U
I don't really like it, but I can respect it for it's quality. My wife digs it. Her father is a singer, and very religious. THat's why I know what I do. It always seems to me that Gospel singers sing with so much emotion... they believe so much in what they're singing about, regardless of whether you do. It makes it different I think.
If you want, check out:
Donny McClerkin - AMAZING voice (also a close minded assembly of God minister, but that's beside the point)
Michael English - Formerly of Gaither Vocal Band
Brian McKnight has been known to sing some amazing Gospel songs.
Just to name a few.

I don't listen to them a lot, but I know the names. Michael English, the Gaithers and Brian McKnight I am familiar with. Thanks.
