62. So far, so good...
only my dad heard me. Everyone has returned home now as tomorrow is my sister's birthday and we are all at my dad's house.

When I told my father what was going on he said, "You always were the unusual one... oh, and by the way, don't wake up everyone with your jocularity." Then he went back into the kitchen.

72. Yes, my dad can be rather stoic...
but he is a very understanding and generous parent. When I was a teenager I was rather rebellious and was constantly in trouble. When I volunteered for the Marines, and made it, he became very proud of me for the first time. He is also proud that I made it through grad school on my own without anyone's financial help.

In order to understand my dad...
He grew up as a Depression-era farm boy and although his family had enough to eat, they had to sell the farm (which had been in the family since colonial times) because my grandfather could not make enough money to pay the taxes, much less buy clothes for them; all the children wore hand-me-downs. Unfortunately for my father his next older sibling was his only sister and by the time certain items of clothing were to be handed down to him (he was the youngest of four) his brother's clothes were completely worn out. So in 1937 he had to wear his sister's hand-me-down shoes to school because the children were required to have shoes in school. I can only imagine what he went through.
To bring a long story to a short ending, the only way he could attend college was to gain entry into the US Naval Academy (no tuition). He became a successful engineer. He is very lovable, yet stoic.

74. that's a ripping good yarn
Good story.

Yeah those old school depression guys have a toughness about them that is something else. My grandfather in the early 40s, when my dad was an infant, he used to get up in the mornings - they lived out in the country - walk and carry water so his family could have it for the day, then walk several miles to the highway and either hitchhike and walk 6 miles or 30 miles to work depending on which job he was working on at the time. And, then he'd have to do it on the way back after work. Ok, he did this in MT, in the coldest spot in the nation in the dead of winter. It gets like 40 below sometimes, with windchill. It's bad. So, anyway, he saved up a little money from his paycheck, got a ride to our reservation town 30 miles away, went to the bank and worked out a deal to get 300 dollars and he bought his first car. Well, to make a long story short, he eventually, ran for tribal council, then became tribal chairman, then became President of the National Congress of American Indians. He spent years afterward as an Indian liaison in DC. He ended up being personal friends with JFK, RFK and rode a horse behind LBJ during his inaugaration parade. All this maybe 15 twenty years removed from being a young family man who had to hitchhike to work in sub-zero weather everyday.

So I tell you, you really have to give it up to those guys, like your dad and my grandfather. Those men were real men, to say the least. They did what had to be done to make our lives easier, that's for sure. :toast:

75. WOW! Your grandfather sounds amazing!
Now I understand why you have RFK as your avatar.

Yes, they were some hard working people back then. As your grandfather had the cold to contend with (which I would consider more difficult), my grandfather worked his farm with a mule (he was born there in 1900 and worked it with his father before taking over in the late 1910s). I can only imagine how hard it was under the SC sun. There is an old family photo somewhere of my grandfather and his mule. The funny part was that the mule had a hat with holes cut out for its ears.

That is funny.

Oh I bet the heat was brutal. I can barely carry my groceries a block without complaining let alone imagine what it would be like working a farm with only mule all day every day.

Yeah my grandfather was an amazing guy. I'll send you an article about him written right before his death. I'd do it here but, I don't want to paste it and the isn't comeing up.

Concerning the heat (as probably with the cold) one becomes accustomed to it. Just think, they did not have AC back when grandpa was working those fields. I was raised without AC and still cannot bring myself to turn it on until it reaches 95 in the shade. In the summer I can barely go into a store without shivering. People here abuse it so much now.

One of my fondest memories (from my mother's side of the family) is laying in bed at night and being lulled to sleep by the sound of the attic fan.

60. I sometimes wonder how I sound when speaking German...
I have been told several things about my manner of speech in German:

- that I picked up the Saxon 'mumble'

- that I seem to have been influenced by Poles as I make many 'sch' sounds when I speak. (For example: when I say 'ich 'muß', it comes out like 'ich musch'; I make the same 'sch' when words end with '-ig'

- in Hamburg this past summer I was told: 'Sie haben einen wunderbaren Hallorischen Akzent.'

Germans know that I am a foreign speaker, but I don't think they know from where. I am frequently asked, 'Sind Sie Englander?'

BTW, I'm still waiting for an answer to the question I asked you yesterday. I'm serious about wanting to hear a woman's point of view on this.

Yeah, I love saying things to brighten somebody's day. It's one of my great pleasures in life. I hate to sound like a sap, but I truly enjoy being good to people. You would be surprised -well maybe not- how many people go through a day and never get any thanks or hear anything positive. I like being nice like that. But, it has to be genuine, because people can tell a phony you know? It's like if a guy is trying to pick up a woman and he says some corny line, yeah, like that's heartfelt. It's stupid. I like to say things that I mean and that make people's day. I get a lot of happiness from it. :)
