Temptation: Living 86 miles north of New Orleans. |
|
I live about an hour and a half from NOLA. I took my kid to Bourbon Street last Sunday before the concert--we had a marvelous time. I hadn't visited in 15 years before our stay last Sunday. When I was a teen/young adult, my friends and I used to travel down at least once a month.
Now I want to go back. In fact, it's all I can think about! Aaargh! The temptation! Acme Oysters! Shopping! People-watching!
What's your kryptonite? What's your weakness that incessantly tempts you?

19. That's ok. They cook 'em. |
|
But people were gobbling down raw oysters at the oyster bar. It was funny, because there was a huge sign behind the shuckers warning that raw seafood can be lethal.
I love raw oysters, but not when I'm planning on walking around the French Quarter in 100+ degree heat. Ya know? Not many bathrooms down there. :D

5. You and I are on the same page. |
|
I'm from Kenner, just west of New Orleans. I spent the first 18 years of my life living there. I then went to Ole Miss for college.
I'm now living in Austin for my second time through school. When I'm done here (in about two years), I'd like to move back closer to home. I miss New Orleans, and I miss my family. I even miss the storms & little hurricanes!
Ideally, I'd love to live north of Lake Pontchartrain (maybe around Ponchatoula, or more northward toward the border) & commute to a local hospital. Maybe build my nice solar-powered home on a few acres of rural land so that I won't be bothered with neighbors, etc. Have a nice veggie garden, go totally solar/off-the-grid, etc. It'd be so nice.
With this plan, I'll be close enough to New Orleans/Metairie/Kenner to enjoy their benefits. So that's my weakness - getting back closer to home.

6. If you built near Ponchatoula... |
|
You would virtually be my neighbor. I have really good friends in Amite, and we drive down several times a year to parties at their home.
Let me know if you ever move nearby, and we'll have to meet in the Vieux Carre for some drinks! :hi:

You've been following me, Tedoll.
I grew up in Gulfport, but my parents were from NO, so I spent a lot of time there. I went off to Mississippi State and then moved to Austin (via Dallas) for grad school. I've stayed, though, mostly because my kids were born here, and don't want to move. Plus, I have some relatives who resemble leeches in Gulfport, still, so this is a comfortable distance.

We usually go to Angels on the Bluffs, in Natchez, MS...it's a graveyard tour at midnight.
But the Voodoo Music Experience sounds great!

11. Living somewhere in or around civilization |

without the midwest winters or the ice storms in the south for that matter. For some reason when I went to www.findmyspot.com many of my choice destinations were in the Bayoy State like Monroe, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and The Crescent City herself.

I visit now and then when I see my parents (who live about 50 miles east of NOLA). For weeks afterwards I find myself trying to get back. Florida does that to me, too.

25. Going to San Antonio for Mexican food. |
|
:9
However, a couple of DUers from Houston are going to SA next month, so I'll be joining them!
SA is just little more than an hour or hour and a half away, and the Mexican food is so good. Especially my favorite ritzy joint, La Fogata. :9
