I am watching the new Battlestar Galactica for the first time |
|
Oh. My. God.
I loved the four-hour 2003 miniseries. I thought it pointed to the greatness of what this series could be. And now I see that the subsequent series actually achieved that. I am almost slackjawed with awe.
I don't have cable. I refuse to give a cent to MSNB, CNN, and the Murdoch cabal. And up until now I've never missed not having that, but now I'm sad because I've completely missed out on this series.
I've just finished watching Episode 3 ("Bastille Day"). Holy mackerel. Who knew that Richard Hatch had an acting job like that in him? He is incredible.

1. The entire 1st season was above average to great... |
|
....depending on the episode.
So far, season 2 is shaping up pretty good as well.

I watch it but it seems a little overwrought and melodramatic and, frankly, silly. And they dumped most of the cool stuff from the original.

I loved the mini series, but the series is boring to me for some reason. I don't know why either. I love sci fi projects

3. I loved the miniseries, but the series? eh ... |
|
The miniseries was awesome. I've watched it several times. I don't have cable so a friend tapes the series for me occasionally. I haven't seen that many episodes, the last one was the recent one where the Cylons boarded the Galactica. These Cylons are *scary*. You do not want to get close to one, you do not one to see you, if they do you die. Compare this with the laughable Cylons from the original series.
My favorite line: The war is over and we *lost*. It's time to start making lots and lots of babies.
But so far I'm not enjoying the episodes as much as the miniseries. There's too many characters to keep straight in my head (also my complaint with "Lost"). All the characters are kind of the same and it's really hard to tell them apart. The "gritty" dark atmosphere kind of genericizes everyone. And the ones you *do* get to know are really pretty unlikable. I absolutely LOVE Madam President and her rosy-cheeked assistant (it'll be interesting to see how he develops), but everybody else is pretty unlikable. Baltar is complex in an interesting way, but the latest episodes seem to imply he's going completely crazy and psychotic. Much less interesting in my opinion.
Also, currently, the sub-plots are kind of boring: Kobol, what's going on there? Caprica, enough already.
But I've only seen a few episodes, maybe that's par for the course. You can't really get to know the characters unless you watch them enough. I'm looking forward to getting the Season 1 DVDs.

4. The Season 1 DVDs are available now at Best Buy |
|
The "UK Version" (though formatted for Region 1). This is what I have. The official US release isn't available until Sept 20th, and it will include a lot of extras not on this one. It also includes the miniseries. Since I already have the miniseries, I decided to hop on down to Best Buy and get this one. I couldn't wait any longer to see this show. I'm glad I didn't.

7. Yup, I was going to get that |
|
But after my doubts about the series I decided to save my money and wait for it on Netflix. Though I may not be able to hold out that long. Especially if there's a long wait.

5. Thank goodness you're on DU! |

I feel the same way about the new BG - the mini was INCREDIBLY GOOD...
But the new series itself? Bland, pretentious, preachy. There aren't characters. Just stick figures. It's not unlike bermantrek in that respect.
I gave up on it after a month or so.
But the point is, if there is an interweaving plot line, that's no excuse to make the individual episodes as boring as gerbil giblet souffle.

8. I'm four episodes in, and although I love this series... |
|
I have to admit that I've become almost worn out by its "bleakness". It's just one terrible tragedy after another, and although that can make for compelling drama, to have it hit you over the head every single week is just exhausting. I will continue to plow through this series, but I'll probably be close to suicidal by the time it's done if it doesn't lighten up any time soon.
