What is your geekiest guilty pleasure.... |
|
And why?
Mine is the band Rush. They were my first concert when I was 13 and some 21 years later I still really enjoy their music even though for most of that 21 years it has been a totally closeted enjoyment. Basically them and any other prog-rock band that I enjoy are total geek guilty pleasures since the only people I can imagine actually enjoying that music are men (I don't personally know any female that doesn't loathe Rush, including my wife), middle aged, possibly still sporting pony tails and collecting comic books and engaging in arguements over whether Kirk was better than Picard (gratuitous Simpsons reference).
But for today I will say it loud and say it proud.
So what is yours?

and I love Rush. A friend and I (we're both huge Rush fans) went to a concert last year and acted like total fools--singing along to all the songs, jumping up and down, sneaking towards the front to grab better seats. It was a blast! We're a bit old to be doing things like this, LOL. I discovered them at 15, with 'Hemisphere's'. I've seen them in concert 4 times--more than any other band. I don't think it's geeky to like them, though some people ridicule them for some odd reason. I guess they don't like Geddy Lee's falsetto, but I love it.
My guiltiest geeky pleasure would probably be hanging out at DU when I really could be getting out more.

5. I am also a female who loves Rush (the rock group only)! |
|
I have seen them in concert 1/2 a dozen times over the years. Have my craziest concert trip at their Moving Pictures concert. Boy did I freak when their picture started moving until I saw everyone else saw it too.

What were smoking to think you could be hallucinating? Hmm? :) I have to admit we were a little doped up--she was on pain pills (prescribed, not for recreation), and I was on allergy medication, and we drank a couple of beers. How pathetic is that?

15. That was almost 20 years ago, in my wild women/girl days. |

If I tried now to live like I did then, it would kill me in a day or two. Oh well, I have my memories, kinda.

I'll play that dumb game for 4 hours at a time, and be thrilled when I see the skyscrapers being built.

7. Weekly trivia contest. |

My friends compete against other teams of folks who have embraced their inner geek. Good food, good company, good ...it's all good, and quite geeky, although social.
Oh, and I've seen Rush 3 times.

9. geekiest pleasure is books |
|
I love the fact that I can patronize dozens of libraries in NJ and have over 100 books checked out at one time and never get a fine. I have it all coordinated with email reminders showing me when to go online and renew my books. When I get to the end of the renewals rule (three times, for a total of three months), I have a pre-established route that never takes me out of my way and I drop off the books in the outdoor drop.
I also have it set up to peruse the new books the libraries get in online and I know exactly which libraries are willing to order the new books I'd like to read. I put in my requests through them and get e-mail notices when my new books are in.
Hey, just in case you think I'm a bit of a "pig," we pay over a grand a month in property taxes where I live. Just getting my money's worth.

I go every other day. If Ashcroft checked my file, he'd get a woody. I've just started, 'The Great Unraveling', and tend to check out the more subversive materials, whether they be movies, CD's or books. I'm a library pig, too, but got too cocky and ended up paying a 15 cent fine a couple weeks ago.
Your frequenting the library so much is good, because that will ensure they get their funding.
I guess I'm a total geek.

have you seen the Rush in Rio DVD? Those Brazillians know how to rock. not very geeky. Rush are a geek band and I'm proud to be a fan of theirs.
Yes is even geekier. I just got the "Symphonic Yes" DVD. Total geek fest. Close to the Edge AND Gates of Dilerium with a symphony orchestra backing them up. And Steve Howe is the new King of the Geeks.

I spend more time than I'd like to admit looking at cladograms (family trees of organisms) on the internet. I find it terribly fascinating, but at the same time.... it's really quite geeky.

Yeah, I read the trilogy all those years ago--the psychedelic paperback edition. Went through it several times, in fact, but went on to other things.
Didn't even go to FOTR in the theaters--not much of a moviegoer. But bought the DVD & loved it. Then bought the extended DVD. I reread the books & finally made it through the Silmarillion. Saw TTT 3 times & bought the theatrical DVD ASAP--the extended edition will arrive this month. Of course, ROTK will probably inspire several theater visits & purchases of both DVD editions. Should a future extra-special edition appear in the future, some will cry "rip off" & the rest of us will ask "how soon?"
I am waiting to purchase the soundtracks--have heard there's a 3-disk special edition coming.
I've bought a few books on Tolkien & the movies--& my first action figure. Legolas, of course. Probably need to get Aragorn as well--they're such a cute couple.

I could talk plant breeding and GM all damn day long. I could talk consolidation of genetic materials worldwide all damn day long.
Worked in a research division for 6 years (no previous experience, but the scientists said I was a "natural" so they educated me), and got hooked. Big thrill looking through a microscope at soybean cyst nematodes.
Peoples' eyes glaze over when I talk world seed bank, crop growing problems in the middle east, etc. etc. etc.
I could talk hot peppers and sweet peppers all damn day long.
Geekius Maximus.
help!
