7. The AVF thing happened again.
he had a brain aneurysm that hemorrhaged, had surgery, was in a coma, came out of the coma, told Brenda that he wanted a divorce, watched TV with David, and pfft. gone.

I hope everyone who reads this thread takes the title seriously:
re: spoilers...

ps. this episode they showed previews of next week's episode (unlike last week's episode, where they didn't show previews; just wanted to leave us hanging wondering, gone or not?), and the previews show the family at his funeral.

awesome episode.

9. lost me last week

Immediately after sex with Maggie, he has the stroke -- after we also see that Brenda has made the surprise choice to attend the Quaker service in an effort to reconcile with him (and thus sees he is not there and realizes he is cheating on her).

Is this supposed to be a message from God? Maybe his punishment for being a sourpuss, or for cheating on his pregnant wife? Or is it just manipulative timing by the storytellers, in a series that's due to end in a couple of episodes? Either way, it's over the top and mars what was a pretty good & gripping show.

Then again, I suppose it's daring to kill the protagonist a couple of hours before the end of the series.

20. The show's theme is death
so, IMO, it makes perfect sense to kill off one of the main characters.

11. I figured that out last week.
He had to buy the farm. If he didn't then the writing would have gone sitcom. Of course, they could have let him live and just move on as the basically immature person that he was and that would be boring in the long run too. Sometimes some characters, no matter how likable just have to go.

12. Weird kind of symmetry, though
if you recall that the series BEGAN with Nate, Sr.'s death.

13. Nate hasn't been really likeable for a time.
He can't treat women decently.
I think the writers are portraying him as a selfish, into-himself cad, just like several other characters. His mother, Ruth, for one thing.
Really, when you think about it, all of the Fishers are somewhat selfish and self-absorbed.
David is the nicest one, and even he is somewhat self-absorbed. Claire I like a great deal, but she is rather spoiled rotten.

I am going to miss this family on TV.

Oh, well..... maybe they will replace it with something good.

He commits the sin and moments later he is magically struck down. Is this supposed to be artistic or didactic?

17. Since Brenda never legally adopted Maya
I think there is a possibility Lisa's sister will make a return.

21. I think Maggie will turn out to be pregnant
and David and Keith will adopt her baby. Brenda will be too distraught to keep Maya and David and Keith will adopt her too.

18. I have sympathy for the Nate character.
Nate is going with Brenda. He's faithful and loving. She's screwing every guy in town.

Then Lisa turns up from his past. She's pregnant and he marries her. After which she's brutally murdered by her brother-in-law with whom she had been having a long affair. The brother-in-law is probably Maya's father.

With Nate reeling from guilt and pain from Lisa's murder, the recovering-sex-addict Brenda steps back in to console him and take over his life. Nate marries her for Maya's sake, and Brenda quickly become pregnant, loses the baby, and becomes pregnant again.

So when a quiet sweet Maggie the spiritual Quaker, Nate's step-sister, comes to town, they have an immediate attraction. She's the opposite of Lisa and Brenda, who both were Type A's with a vengeance.

So it was inevitable that Nate would make a break and go for Maggie. Brenda's pregnancy was the only thing holding Nate back for a while. When he awakened from the coma, he was honest with Brenda and told her he didn't think they would get through this -- together. It's the first time since the show began that Nate actually took a stand. My problem with Nate has always been that he's so mealy and confused. He finally found what he's been looking for.

Nate and Brenda were never right for each other. Maggie is sort of pukie to me, but she's what Nate really needed in his life, a spiritual and giving person. He found his true love and pffft he's dead. Great show.
