My cuz caught a 4 foot shark and released it.. Can it reallly survive if
it has a friggin' hook embedded in its mouth or throat? (He snipped the line and let it go and told me, it would survive. I doubt it. Sport fishing is twisted. I think PETA goes overboard but really, how can people catch those big beautiful fish for sport.

1. The hook should dissolve

if he used the correct kind.

"... how can people catch those big beautiful fish for sport."

Twisted, especially given that shark tastes wonderful. ;)

2. It's not just the hook...
but fish are often exhausted after a long fight, and even sharks may not have the strength to feed or avoid any predators after them.

Me, I can't see the "sport" in it, and eat what I catch. Some sharks, like Mako, are delicious, and even sold as swordfish by crooked restaurants and fishmongers.

3. I suspected "stress' would be a factor contributing to death.

4. Sure is...
a lot of fisherman don't want to know how many fish die after catch&release.

Might as well just eat 'em.

7. especially when deep sea fishing
when you haul a fish up from the bottom, it causes their swimming bladder to expand and sometimes burst - the fish is basically dead at that point because it can no longer swim with a damaged swimming bladder - kind of sadistic when you have to throw the small ones back.

5. I wouldn't worry too much
about the shark. As long as your cuz landed it in a reasonable amount of time, it will be just fine.
As madeline_con stated, the hook will dissolve quickly.

What kind of shark was it?

6. Most likely it should be okay
I don't get the appeal of sport fishing either.

8. Salt water will make short work of that hook
and sharks are tough-ass critters from dinosaur times. I have caught and lost fish before hear docks and come back later on that day or the next and hooked the same fish, still had my hook and leader in its mouth. Some guys talk of getting their lures back that way too.

Sport and recreational fishing are harmless to fish species. Millions of Americans fish reacreationally. Pollution and commercial fishing are far bigger threats

9. Fish do it all of the time, but I really don't have a clue. I
hope it survives.
