Why is John Dolton's mustache white?

Help me out here. Normally, when men age, their hair starts to turn grey. First it's salt-and-pepper, then the temples turn white (like George Bush now).

THEN, the facial hair starts to turn grey and then white. You can often see photos of people with grey-speckled hair while the beard stays brown.

What's up with Bolt-undone?

My Dad colored his mustache for a while, because it was going mostly gray, while his hair was still mostly dark, though with some gray.

My dad, for example, decided to shave off the beard he had had since his mid-twenties a few years ago because it was almost completely white while the hair on his head was only about one-fifth grey, and he thought it made him look too old. (He has since grown it back, since most of his head hair has gone grey and it doesn't clash so much.)

So Bush's boy may just have a different greying pattern. Or maybe he dyes his hair and is too cheap to get some "Just for Men" for his beard. haha

7. In my case

my facial hair went salt and pepper quite a while before the graying started at the temples. I have quite a bit of light color in my mustache and salt and pepper in my beard with just a very little graying at the temples. So I think it varies from person to person. There are plenty of thing to criticize about Bolton but I don't think this is one of them (his mustache looks ridiculous, in my opinion, but the color isn't his fault). It doesn't indicate he's from another planet or anything, although there are other reasons to believe that. :)

I've seen other guys with X-colored hair and white/gray whiskerage as well as white/gray hair over X-colored whiskerage.
