I keep forgetting, when posting to DU |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 09:46 PM by leftofthedial
how much of our membership is young people--high schoolers, even junior high schoolers.
First, I salute you smart young people. I'm sorry you are coming of age in such a messed-up world. I wish we had been better stewards (although I don't know how we would have been).
Second, I apologize for anything I say here that is offensive to you. I'm really just a crotchety old teddy bear who loves everybody (except repukes).
Please, please, please, no matter how cynical, jaded or burnt we oldsters may seem, NEVER lose your hope, your idealism or your righteous anger.

seriously though, I just love seeing the young folk on a political board. When I was your age things were pretty boring but for chrissakes now the future of our country - and my future and yours - is being seriously threatened - we need you youngsters badly. And socially, the young folk keep me on my toes in other ways - they constantly talk about stuff and educate me to what's going on in the younger generations. I find y'all fascinating!

we all need you young people to stay strong
no matter how discouraging the rise of fascism may get
To be free one needs constant and unrelenting vigilance over one's weaknesses. A vigilance which requires a moral energy most of us are incapable of manufacturing. We relax back into the moulds of habit. They are secure, they bind us and keep us contained at the expense of freedom. To break the moulds, to be heedless of the seductions of security is an impossible struggle, but one of the few that count. To be free is to learn, to test yourself constantly, to gamble. --Robyn Davidson
we need you who have not yet relaxed "into the moulds of habit" to keep the revolutionary spirit alive.

13. I love that teenagers post on DU. |
|
I'm 25, still young. But when I was 16 I couldn't have cared less about politics. I wish I had cared more.

and they care
that's partly my fault, but also reflects that they are smart, have a powerfuls sense of social justice that is offended on an hourly basis by the fascists, and that their peer groups are also fairly aware.

25. My dad tried desperately, |

probably too desperately, to get me into politics. It wasn't until I turned 18 and registered to vote that I figured I should find out what was really going on in the world.

26. What's the average age here? |
|
When I first started reading messages in this area I thought that it was around 16. I came back later and it was more mature. I hope that our party hasn't brought fascists into it. I use to hate peer groups in high school they did nothing for the school but make people argue.

23. Thank you for the salute and advice. |
|
I appreciate it. I've got a way to go to catch up to the majority of DU's population, as I've got a little under-a-month until I hit 13, but I'm doing all I can if it be RL Democratic stuff or through DU.
Thank you for the advice, it's well taken.
