1. How about a homeopathic margarita?
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 10:13 AM by salvorhardin
You can't tell by looking at it, but I've just diluted a regular margarita in a volume of water equivalent to the ocean, filled a glass with it, and allowed it to evaporate leaving the pure water vapor essence of the homeopathic margarita behind. But it's OK, 'cause the water vapor remembers the margarita. Same effect, and it's much healthier for you.

Don't forget the lime.:hi:

9. I can do the Absolute and cranberry
but the citric acid in the lime would contaminate the 100% Natural Healing effects of the Absolute (and believe me, vodka is good for what ails you). However, I'm sure if you just think happy thoughts about limes while playing an old Harry Bellafonte record you will achieve the beneficial results you desire.

Here's your homeopathic seabreeze

And now that you mention it I will keep the lime in my mind and out out of my vodka. :toast:

Let me know how many I can have before I'm over the legal limit.
Thanks.

17. Here you go
Somewhere in Europe, someone mixed the most perfect gin and tonic ever made 6 days ago. I waved your glass in the general direction of California so as to catch the rarefied and purified essences of that perfect drink as it was borne around the world on the prevailing westerly winds. Drink it slowly 'cause this makes it extra potent. You may have as many as you want as long as you hum an Indian raga after every drink so as to crystalize your quantum chi.

I forgot the tune to the Indian raga, can I hum Zappa's Valley Girl instead?

No, I don't think I'm a woo-woo. Matter of fact I'm absolutely certain that I am NOT a woo-woo. Of course I cannot give you scientific proof of this. Only statistics which some people here do not think to be a scientific approach which frankly surprises me... 98 percent of the people who know me would testify that I am anything but a woo-woo, just openminded :) The other 2 percent are just trying to stir up trouble.

8. Statistics alone have nothing to do with science
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 10:53 AM by salvorhardin
It's the process through which the data from which the statistics were generated that will or will not follow the scientific method. The stats are just one part of that method (the last stage -- analysis or evaluation) so even if the stats are honestly and accurately derived (and often they aren't), they don't really tell us anything useful if the experiment wasn't constructed well or any of the other steps were short-circuited. And... even assuming the scientific method was followed, the stats were honestly and accurately derived, it still doesn't mean anything unless the experiment is repeated over many times and the same results were shown.

Stats by themselves are just numbers. They're ethereal and can be used to demonstrate almost anything.

FWIW: They're not trying to make trouble, but if you just make bold claims with nothing to back it up but a bunch of questionable stats they will hold you accountable for your statements.

10. *rolls her eyes* I thank you a lot for educating me. I'm truly
grateful. Of course I HAVE read about statistics before but now I feel truly enlightened. Had you read more carefully you would have seen that I was talking of people who know me, not of people in any DU thread. Forgive me for trying a lighter note here in the lounge.

12. Bad old science! Always wanting facts and evidence!
How dare those scientists question magic?
:spank:

How dare they attempt to shine the light on frauds and quacks!
:spank:

How dare they promote the agenda of science!
:spank:

How dare they advise people of the dangers of pseudo-science!
:spank:

Science is such a buzzkill.

13. Welcome... I never leave the Lounge anymore.
I became tired of Googling links to support my argument
against the Googled links which where thrown upon any
word I uttered.

Instead, I developed a drinking problem.

Seemed to make more sense.

I guess we're not allowed to have thoughts of our own
any longer.

Our thoughts no longer rate... Only the thoughts of
others (preferably famous people) hold any sway.

Pfff... So, what'cha thinking XemaSab?

*dream sequence fade*

There's a beach. Hey, no! It's an island.
Somewhere warm. I'm alone... Only sounds
are the faint waves lapping gently on the
shore and a cooling breeze though the palm
fronds.

I have plenty to eat and drink.

I walk up to the tide line... I reach
in my pocket... Take out my cell phone.

and THROW IT AS FAR AS POSSIBLE away from
the beach.

There's a slight burble in the distance as
it vibrates as it hits the water... It slowly
fades as it settles to the bottom of the lagoon.

*reality fade sequence*

Ah, so there's what I'm thinking XemaSab.

21. *grins* Poor XemaSab! In my case
I said that my veterinarian (who after all looses his customers very quickly if his cures don't work) always uses homeopathic medicine first before he tries out anything else and that he told me that statistics show that it works. And that Dr. med. vet.s all over Europe increasingly often use homeopathy. Now I'm supposed to spit out those statistics... and then I'm being told in the lounge where I come crying that statistics are not scientific.

Oh well. I mean I don't even CARE if people over in Science or anybody else for that matter try homeopathy or not. If they want to poison themselves with chemicals while making the pharma industry rich that's just fine with me. Should have kept my mouth shut and let them argue that homeopathy is bogus all among them illustrous selves.

Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 12:04 PM by salvorhardin
What about that apocryphal dihydrogenmonoxide that is the primary ingredient in so many homeopathic products? I suppose that's not a chemical? Nor is the ethanol in that drink you wanted earlier a chemical? I guess we had different chemistry instructors.

26. You should know better, neweurope
You can't argue with Skeptics.

You will lose because they are incapable of error. After all, they are the stalwart Men of Science; who are we to question such Titans of rationality?

If you do catch one in an error, s/he will stalk you for years in an effort to prove that you are a woo-woo, a holocaust denyer, a Scientologist, or more dearly yet, wrong.

Repent, and beg those whom you have given offense for their pardon and indulgence. (This is especially important if you want to attend graduate school in a Science or work at NIH, CDC or NASA.)

And remember, "Extraordinary giraffe art objects require extraordinary brightly-colored machine parts." (2 Sagan 3:14159)
