1. Because they were instructed to believe that.

And I bet most of them don't even know why they think he's God. They just know that they're suppose to.

6. Beats me..I can't think of anything he did that's even MEDIOCRE
let alone great. On the other hand, to be fair, he did a creditable job as host of "Death Valley Days." But I still liked the Old Ranger and even Yvonne DeCarlo better.

7. Even people who know better...
Even people who know the truth about Reagan are reluctant to speak it without kind qualifiers.

9. Because of their collective insecurity and defensiveness.
In 1980, republicans were still smarting from their guy, Richard Nixon, a holdover from the 50's (their last good decade) having to resign in disgrace in 1974. Gerry Ford was no substitute and was marking time until the republicans could get a "real" candidate. Add in the fact that America was symbolically kicked in the balls in front of the world community by withdrawing from Vietnam before everyone recognized that we won (but didn't) and by Iran taking over our embassy in Tehran and took our citizens as hostages. Further add a true born-again Christian in the White House who turned down the thermostat, wore sweaters, loved his wife and family, but did not have the male charisma that demanded respect (style over substance).

Enter Ronald Reagan, a republican wet-dream. He had a great image that was transferred from movies and TV to the bully pulpit. He was a man's man. Tough on communism. Tough on anyone who DARED to suggest that America was in its twilight (remember "Morning in America"?). Tough on the democrats. And he had a political machine. A machine that started to define the democrats before they could. And he was an effective and persuasive communicator. And avuncular. And women admired his machismo. Men wanted to have his confidence.

And to specificly answer your question: Freepers think he's god because of the multiple legends the repubicans have built around him. You know the drill. Booming stock market (forget '87). Got rid of the Berlin Wall AND the Soviet Union within 8 years. Got the Iranian hostages released on his first day in office. Glamor. Cowboy. Got Tip O'Neil to pay attention to republicans like never before. Survived death (you can't kill cockroaches either). Etc. The republicans got a figurehead and they will never let go of it.

12. So very true...it was all a fabrication of monumental proportions...
typical Hollywood Celebrity Hype. The GOP learned well from the despised Hollywood 'creatures from hell'. They understand that marketing is the essential ingredient in dealing w/the political ignorance of the general Public. In reality, there was nothing to Reagan, absolutely nothing. It is as if there was a sort of dream-like state for 8 years, and people refused to awaken until the bush I debacle.

Reagan and Custer share the same absurd fate, both were monumental failures in many aspects, but Libby Custer, and Nancy Reagan have worked tirelessly to ensure they be enshrined as demi-gods in the American psyche. Reagan was not the brightest light in the chandelier, and toward the end of his second term, there were serious, albeit hushed, questions as to his mental abilities. Questions that should have been asked earlier, as I see it.

Everything Reaganesque was carefully calculated for maximum positive marketing. He was nothing more than a typically scripted actor, reading the lines handed him, and hitting wardrobe when necessary. The GOP learned from the Kennedy/Nixon debate, that people have to have the TV 'presence', and not look like a bum on a bad night. reagan was also one of the very few Hollywood types that the GOP could find to run.

In the long run of history, reagan will go down as a failed president.
he won't be seen as a complete failure, but his major policy decisions were a disaster for the country's future. Bush I and this dirt clod we have in there now will make failure seem like the GOP norm, but reagan started the ball rolling downhill for this current morph of the GOP. Failure IS an option for the GOP, and they are damn good at failure.

And, as infidels, they are doomed to an eternity of BANJOBLIVION. May Lester Flatt have mercy on their souls...

13. freepers prefer their thought
"pre-fab".

Someone else told them Reagan was God. Okay, if you say so.

Same reason they think that anyone elected president must be supported in a war effort.

Reagan has always reminded me of those hollow chocolate candies that are often found at the bottom of a child's Easter basket. By then, the really good candy is gone. All that's left are those brightly packaged candies that look good. Then you unwrap the foil, and find a thin chocolate shell with a HOLLOW CENTER.

Thought this before I learned he suffered from Alzheimer's. So, it's not a reference to his illness. Rather to the Republican tendency to prefer the package to the contents.

19. Because he played the part well.
That and he single handidly destoryed the evil Soviets, which although good also brought about the end of the typical Russian bad guy.. ah the 80s.

Reagan's acting of a strong president and his famous "Tear down this wall" speech has forever enshrined him in freeper hearts.
