Climbing Youngster Breaks 16th Century Statue In Italy
i have a feeling i'm gonna need some of this :popcorn: :D

<snip>

FLORENCE, Italy -- The 16th-century statue of Neptune in Florence's main square was damaged Wednesday when a youngster clambered onto it.

The attempt to climb the Neptune fountain in Piazza della Signoria severed the right hand of the colossal marble statue. Broken fragments damaged other parts of the fountain, including a sea shell on the base.

Images caught by video cameras allowed police to identify two brothers, one of whom climbed the fountain before dawn, suffering a slight injury, city officials said. The brothers are from Empoli, not far from Florence in northern Italy. Their names and ages were not made public.

The Neptune fountain, designed by Italian sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati, is also known as "Il Biancone" ("The White Giant"). The statue is set in the center of the fountain, with bronze figures at the base.

Officials said the hand will be restored by year's end and put back in place next spring.

12. Yeah, Italy isn't so good about cleaning those things up. The Pantheon
was a bit of a mess when we saw it.
