Watch Weird Al Yankovic tear Eminem to pieces
http://www.collegehumor.com/movies/950545/

He couldn't make a video out of his parody of Eminems "8 Mile" song, so he strung this together and made Eminem look like a complete jackass.

7. I don't know.. I think wierd Al looked kinda like an ass
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 01:13 PM by notadmblnd
Marshal Mathers is not known for his intellect and as many people from that part of the country are, he just calls it like he sees it.

Seems to me wierd Al was just trying to shove his I'm smarter and better than you attitude down Mathers throat just because he's pissed that Mathers didn't give him permission to make money off his music.

I don't like people who think their smarter and better than others. Eminem has his own kind of smarts. Try dropping the two of them off in some blighted urban area for a weekend and see who comes out the better.

17. If by "that part of the country", you mean Detroit
Then I'm from there as well. Most of us Detroiters (current and former) have a sense of humor and don't take ourselves quite as seriously as Eminem does. ;-)

Luckily, most of us aren't as sexist and homophobic as Eminem either.

38. first and foremost, he's a product of his environment
growing up in urban inner city poverty, having a parents who's good time was more important than raising their children. In spite of that, he has learned right from wrong (many times the hard way), he has pulled himself up by his bootstraps and made something of himself.

I think, what he does (and does it very well) is he takes his music and uses it to slam peoples faces into the hard wall of reality he shoves their hypocracy back down their throats. Is some of his music ugly? It is.. but that doesn't mean he endorses the actions that some of his lyrics describe.

I have watched his movie, I have listened to his albums and I do think I understand much of what he's trying to say. His detractors will say that he sold out (but I wonder how much of that is really envy) I say, he's doing what he's got to do to survive.

Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 01:29 PM by youspeakmylanguage
...if an artist doesn't want him to make a parody song out of their work.

Weird Al is simply too hit-and-miss as a comedian. The Red Hot Chili Peppers gave him permission to do a parody of one of their songs, and then later regretted it because the parody wasn't funny in the slightest (it was about the Flintstones, if I remember correctly). Flea was pissed off enough to bring it up publicly.

I think a lot of artists are simply sick of his crappy parodies and look at them as a way to make money off of their music.

14. I hardly think Eminem is worried about corporate moneymakers
He panders to pop music.

Its not as though he's above all that, or that he is too worried about the integrity of his music.

I don't know anyone who has thought a Weird Al parody has been funny since the 80's. That seems to include some of the artists who have been parodied.

26. We're talking about parody
Last time I checked, it was covered under the 1st amendment, whether it's for profit or not.

And you perhaps you might do better to not assume so much when debating someone. When did I say I liked his work or that I'd buy his cds? That actually has nothing to do with the point and seems to indicate that this is more about personal taste to you than freedom of expression.

27. I don't know what the laws specifically say in cases like this...
...but why then would Weird Al have to ask permission from Eminem?

Also, if Weird Al is protected by the First Amendment, what is Eminem going to do about it? Sue him? It will get thrown out of court.

29. No, it wouldn't get thrown out of court
~snip~

Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc.

Creators of parody may be faced with questions of copyright infringement. In this 1994 decision, the Supreme Court held that a commercial parody may be a “fair use” in accordance with Section 107 of the Copyright Act, as a defense against an accusation of copyright infringement.

Is a massive deterrent, wouldn't you say? Or would you like for me to list a couple of cases where artists were bankrupted by similar lawsuits? Which artist do you think the industry would support?

37. Right
You know groups that would give free legal representation to Weird Al. Why am I doubtful of this?

Like I said, I think this is more about personal taste with you than about freedom of expression. You don't like Weird Al and that's okay. I'm not a big fan of his stuff either. Doesn't mean I'm going to support Eminem in this situation, an "artist" who also tried to silence an insult comic dog because he didn't like what he was saying either.

Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 02:34 PM by youspeakmylanguage
...just as fair use copyright exemptions usually don't apply to song lyrics. For instance, many of the copyrighted work in signature lines here could be exempt under fair use, but if the person or company who owns the rights to the lyrics in my signature line could sue me. Not that they would win anything - blood from a stone and all that.
