1. Un Chien Andalou...
A friend of mine told me about that movie, and I was really interested to see it...then she told me about the eye slicing scene. I have to say, as much as I want to see it, I probably never will, because of that one scene. Don't think I could stomach seeing an eyeball getting sliced.

5. is it real?
could it be?

I heard about it at the Dali exhibit in Philly this spring. I want to see it, and I probably will if it's really real, but damn, I hope not.

7. The eye being sliced in extreme close-up is actually a goat's eye...
its an early special effect.

10. It's a surrealist film...
IMDb plot description:

"In a dream-like sequence, a woman's eye is slit open--juxtaposed with a similarly shaped cloud obsucuring the moon moving in the same direction as the knife through the eye--to grab the audience's attention. The French phrase "ants in the palms," (which means that someone is "itching" to kill) is shown literally. A man pulls a piano along with the tablets of the Ten Commandments and a dead donkey towards the woman he's itching to kill. A shot of differently striped objects is repeatedly used to connect scenes."

It was co-written by Salvador Dali.

17. Anyone know if David Lynch was influenced...
by this director or genre? The mood portrayed in the stills reminds me a lot of Eraserhead and Grandmother (think that was the title)

26. If you want a film with imagery to haunt your nightmares...
Try "Begotten". The opening scene features "God" disemboweling himself with a straight razor.

16. It's an incredible scene
Buñuel and Dalí used a sheep's eyeball for the actual event, giving new meaning to the artistic term trompe d'œuil. (Yes, the sheep had already been slaughtered, and the eye was purchased separately.)

When I saw the movie, I didn't know what to expect. It was for a film class, and it was on the schedule. I had a mild pain in my eye for the rest of the day -- and I'm not that suggestible.
