9. Bob Ross was the bomb!
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 04:57 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Was it great fine art? No, not really - but I bet when he was painting his own paintings he was pretty good.

But Bob's real artistic genius - his real art - was giving the avearage goobers the freedom to express themselves artistically, not about realism or technique or blah blah blah, but about the process of making art as a fun, creative, energizing, soul-enriching experience.

I wish he would have done a series of "let's paint abstract" painting shows, too. Just a few of 'em, a "Let's paint our feet and do a happy dance on the canvas and see what happens, shall we?" and "Take the jar and, with a big smile, toss all the paint at the canvas over there! Wasn't that fun? Isn't that great? Now, toss another one - use whatever color you want, it's your world".

I remember an episode that had him showing photos of the cool squirrels that used to visit his backyard feeders. Then without missing a beat, he went back to painting.

Squirrels, afros, and painting...can't get any better that that!

A very cool, laid-back kinda guy...painting all the happy clouds he wants in heaven! O8)

BTW, I bought a spiffy t-shirt from Target recently. It had Bob Ross and his happy trees on it. :)

21. We don't make mistakes when we paint
We have "happy accidents."

I watched him as well, and I have one of those t-shirts that says, "Happy Trees" on it.

I wore it to work, and my boss told me that when he watched him as a kid, he would get stressed out because he didn't think that Bob could finish his current painting in half an hour.

I asked if he understood that his getting stressed out was the opposite of what Bob was trying to do for him. :)

anywhere you want; this is your world, remember. Let's put in the indications of a few highlights........there. And let's...let's give him a friend! He lives right...right...THERE!

Time to clean the brush now. Into the thinner it goes...and remember to use odorless thinner, blot it...and then just, hee-hee-hee, beat the devil out of it!

If I didn't use odorless thinner like this, my wife would just...well, she'd just kick me right out of the house!"

33. Model Railroads? I love model railroads!
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 08:32 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I've been considering the last couple years that, when I finally have a house and can finally build a layout again, I'd like to do at least one section that's totally abstract (since that's the kind of artwork I do).

I think it would be kinda cool - shoot for a mix of abstracted splashes and lines and geometry, and mix it with a bit of surrealism.

"Hey Rabrrrrrr, what's the giant chicken with the eiffel tower coming out of it's head and the river of phlegm pouring into Wilfred Brimley's scrotum?"

"That's the train station, Bob"

"But, how do the people get into it? The tracks are on the other side of the table."

"Through the window in Kelly Ripa's breast over there, the one hanging from the monkey skull propped against the tube of Brill Cream"

57. My most sedate memories.
I once was recovering from an operation during my grade school years. While in the hospital I was lying on my bed watching tv. Well, when the painkiller shots came I finally found Bob Ross on the PBS channel. Soon I was in a truly "happy place." When I later heard Pink Floyd and heard "comfortably numb" lyrics I knew exactly what that feels like.

Mmmm, comfortably numb watching Bob Ross. He was the human opiate.

His technique is actually quite stunning when you realize how fast he could do certain things. His genius was also in making it effortless and inviting.

63. The most relaxing TV show in history
Maybe the most relaxing thing EVER. Better than Quaaludes or Valium.

I remember my first job as a physical therapist working in a hospital. Every day was long and just brutal. This show was on just as I came home. I would sit in my rocking chair before the TV, kick up my aching feet, and in five minutes, the stress would melt completely away. His voice, his demeanor, the paintings...everything was just so calm and lovely.

I loved Bob Ross. I wept when I heard he passed.
