I didn't get the job :(
I have been job-searching (although still employed currently) for a couple of months. I am DESPERATE to move back to my hometown, to be closer to family, for several reasons. So, I get an interview. Then, they ask for me to fly there for a second interview. I go. The interview goes fine (I think). Wait 1 1/2 weeks... and I don't get the job! And the reason? "We have other candidates with experience more suited to our needs." Well, if you had other candidates with better experience, why did you make me waste $500 to come for an interview??? My experience is RIGHT THERE on my resume. *sighs*

One of my best friends works for this place, and I was SO excited about working with him. The job was PERFECT for me. I am so bummed. Back to the drawing board. But if I have to fly to this city every month for interviews, and wind up not getting the job, I'm going to be constantly broke.

Bella

2. Can you set aside a week just to interview with prospective companies?
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 07:12 PM by GOPisEvil
Traveling for one interview at a time would break the bank.

Edit - sorry you didn't get the job. :(

5. No, I can't
The job I currently have only doles out vacation six hours per month. I have used up all my vacation time currently. So I can't even get ONE full vacation day per month to go on interviews. Plus, I have family to see in other areas of the country as well, besides the one I'm trying to find a job in.

 I'm sorry it didn't work out.

Damn them for making you fly out for a second interview though. That's ridiculous.

17. Thanks
I got the job I currently have by flying out for the second interview at my own expense. At least these guys were smart enough to know they wanted to hire me BEFORE flying me out, and gave me a job offer the same day as my face-to-face interview.

I HAVE to move back to Houston for personal reasons, but I can't do it without a job. I even have a Houston address listed on my resume, to let employers know I already have a residence waiting for me, since most employers see an out of state address on a resume and immediately discard it.

Well, back to the salt mines of job searching.

11. Shouldn't they at least be reimbursing you for your expenses?
When I went job hunting, I was reimbursed for travel, hotel, etc.

12. Companies don't do that anymore
Most won't even pay MOVING expenses when they hire you!

13. I am sorry to hear that.
It sounds trite, but it could happen that something better will come along, and you'll be glad you didn't get it.

15. Back in the olden days..
... when I worked for companies :) it was customary for the company to pick up the tab for travel to an interview. I'd never spend my own $$, make them, that way they have something invested in it, something to lose. And if they aren't willing to pay, consider yourself a weak candidate that they are interviewing to fulfill some numerical requirement or something. :(

16. NO companies pay for interview travel anymore
and very few pay for moving expenses. The way the economy is, companies can be as cut-throat as they want.

Best of luck for the continued search, though. I loathe job hunting, and don't envy you at all.
