A co-worker's brother sold his business for $1.25 million. |
|
Plus he gets a 5 year contract to keep working. He is in the oilpatch in Alberta. I don't think I know of anyone who hit the jackpot like this.

3. It's probably more common than you realize. |

Not to be a snob, but that doesn't impress me that much, in the sense that this seems fair, that is, if it's a business worth buying, it's probably going to be worth at least that much.

It's a business he started after he retired, and its growth has been exponential over the past three years. We keep tossing tossing around the idea of giving up our jobs and going to work in the "family business," but it would entail radical lifestyle changes and a move to the rural midwest.
I want to start my own business and sell it for oodles of money too!

Actually, sales and service of breathing air compressor systems. He got into scuba as a hobby while working as a science teacher, and ran a part-time dive business on the side. After his retirement he sold the dive business and began selling the compressor systems to fire depts in the region. Sales after 9/11 skyrocketed because fire departments were getting FEMA and Homeland Security grants to purchase equipment.
Whenever I hear him talk about how well the business is doing, I hear a funeral bell toll in my head.

Problem is, a dump truck had to run over his leg for him to get it.

I know a guy how was awarded ~ 8 million. Unfortunately, he was in a semi-vegetative state due to botched surgery, so he couldn't enjoy it.
