Astrologers, scientists fight over Mumbai deluge cause

Mumbai: Indian astrologers, numerologists and scientists were Wednesday arguing over the cause of the Mumbai deluge, with stars, numbers and scientific data being variously cited to explain why the city of 15 million suffered such a drenching.

Numerologists quoted by the newly-launched Daily News and Analysis newspaper blamed the number 26 - the date in July when Mumbai was hit by its heaviest-ever rainfall in a 24-hour period.

They said last December's tsunamis, floods in India's Gujarat state in June this year and an earthquake in the same state in January 2001 all happened on the 26th day of the month.

"Eight, which is two plus six, amounts to a number which brings disaster," said numerologist Niraj Mancchanda. "Torrential Tuesday was on the anvil."
