"Oh, Daveyyyyyyyy" HEY, kids, it's Davey and Goliath on DVD.

http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/daveyandgoliathvol1.php

In the early 1960s, the United Lutheran Church in America earmarked more than a million dollars to develop a new kind of children's programming: a wholesome show that would center on the adventures of a young boy named Davey and his faithful dog, Goliath, who would face simple problems to be solved with a gentle lesson in church-approved morality and caring. To get the show in production, they turned to two of the most prominent talents in the industry, animators Art and Ruth Clokey, whose stop-motion series Gumby was a certified Saturday morning hit. The fresh-faced values of the show clicked with the Clokeys, and over the next decade-and-a-half they produced over sixty fifteen-minute episodes and six half-hour specials of Davey and Goliath. Today, more than forty years after the show first debuted, Davey and Goliath have become a permanent part of the pop culture landscape, thanks to references in commercials and TV shows like The Simpsons and Mystery Science Theater 3000.

A well-meaning youngster still learning the intricacies of his social world, Davey Hansen (Dick Beals, Roger Ramjet) invariably gets into trouble, usually through acting carelessly towards others. Luckily, whenever he finds himself at a moral crossroads Davey can turn to his trusty dog Goliath (Hal Smith, The Andy Griffith Show). Goliath, who can talk only to Davey, always brings a sobering dose of scruples to the problem and helps his precocious master learn a valuable lesson.

13. It was very cool of the makers to let them use that.
Yes, they did get permission for it.

4. I Grew up in the ELCA, of course I remember D&G!

Now before the anti-religionists come out and bash this show, just remember, Members of the ELCA tend to be on our side. They tend not to be the Falwell-esque Frisitan types.

6. Did Davey pull a 'Old Yeller' in the series finale?
You know, slingshot poor old Goliath? I mean, that's a moral decision aimed at getting rid of mad dogs...

8. Big ole nostalgic sigh
Oh sweet joys of childhood, Davey & Goliath, Pokey & Gumby, Bugs (wascally wabbit), speed racer, lost in space, johnny quest, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Captain Kangaroo, Lucy's Toyshop, The Jetson's, George of the Jungle, Woody Woodpecker, and those great educational spots - ~conjunction junction, what's your function~

Electric Company, Dark Shadows, Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, Soupy Sales, Laugh In, The Monkees, Adams Family, Flippo the Clown, Shari Lewis and Lambchop, The Banan Splits, Mod Squad....Lucky Charms are magically delicious, Trix are for kids.

Fascination, Mystery Date, bubble gum in the long skinny packages with flavors like green apple and sour as hell, fizzies, space sticks, twin pops, EZ bake ovens, incredible edibles, slinkies, play doh, silly putty, clackers (how many of you nearly killed yourselves with those?) jarts, trolls, sea monkeys, rock em sock em robots, hula hoops.

Can I have a nap now?

9. We must have grown up in the same era since I know
about every one of your cultural reference. I did nearly kill myself and half the neighborhood with those Jarts. Amazing that they ever let them on the market in the first place. As for Davey and Goliath, the show was so bad, it was good.

18. Well, if you were born one year prior to 1960, yep
I have noticed lately that I get nostalgic for that age more than I used to. One age I do not miss at all are my teens. Really would not want to visit that again, but oh to be 7 or 8 or 9 and poking snakes in the rocks at the creek on a hot summer day.

12. I loved D & G.
And yes, despite the popular myth, it wasn't fundie drivel. It had a spiritual message, but it was quite ecumenical.

that's what I remember best from the show... His soap box racer careening off the track because he was too busy playing with his new parrot to hear the moral of the cotter pin story.
