So my boss went squirrel hunting
He told us on Wednesday that he was taking a long weekend to go squirrel hunting. He and a group of friends have even rented a cabin for the expedition. We had caught him thumbing through the L.L. Bean catalogue lately. No doubt he was selecting his squirrel hunting outfit.

For some reason squirrel hunting strikes me as an unusual form of recreation. I hope he's like John Kerry and is treating himself to a nice squirrel dinner somewhere. (I left a recipe for squirrel haggis on his desk.) I also had hoped to greet him with a color photo printed from the web of a squirrel's head mounted on a wall. But I haven't had much luck finding such a photograph.

While doing my search through Google images I came across a rather odd site. The partner and I have sent it to a few friends who think we're thoroughly nuts because for some reason, we can't stop laughing about it. So tell us? Has job-related stress sent us around the bend?

1. Tell him that the civilian M-16 is the preferred weapon
for 'varmint' hunting (ie, the AR-15 according to my gun nut friends), so I'm assuming it's probably good for squirrel hunting. He may want to consider a powerful scope, an extra large "pre ban" magazine, a bipod, a bayonett, a grenade launcher, a laser sight, and a collapsable stock, in case the Ruskies invade us while he's squirrel hunting. Then he can save the nation with his varmint rifle.

BTW, my hillbilly friends tell me squirrels is good eatin'. I won't feel cheated if I go through life not eating squirrel though.

2. .223 rifle is OK for varmints but not small game you want to eat
The round fired by a standard AR-15 would turn a squirrel into a useless mess.

If your boss plans to EAT the squirrels a humble .22 Long Rifle is more than enough gun. I'd actually recommend an air rifle because they are inherently more accurate than any firearm.

3. Varmit hunting is different than squirrel hunting
IE, you want to eat the squirrels, the varmits you don't care... you just want them dead.

.223 causes severe wounds and was designed for use against an enemy who holds the treatment of wounded in the same high regard as do we. Unfortunately, we have not had a war against anyone like that since the thing was introduced.

The other poster is correct, .22 long Rifle is the caliber for this endevour.

6. Are squirrels varmints?
In forests are they considered varmints?

4. Wouldn't the grenade launcher be overdoing it?
Besides, those little critters are fast and would skitter off. I could see the bayonets coming out sometime after they polish off the bottle of 50 year old Port. But I wonder if they'll do more damage to each other than the squirrels.
