1. I use ITunes to do it
but I'm sure there are other freeware apps that can do the same thing

3. Don't, if you can manage without doing so
Converting from one lossy format to another is never a good idea, and the result will always sound worse. Better to keep them in their original formats unless you really can't use them that way.

Better compression rate and sound than MP3. Open Source, too. Of course, if you own an iPod you're out of luck.

I'm using iTunes and have figured it out now. I'm trying to load a bunch of music on my husband's Palm LifeDrive; it only takes mp3s.
